by Jesslyn Lye

There’s an indescribable sense of old-world magic when it comes to opening a music box, with their intricate designs, moving parts, and enchanting music. And at Okdodoo, you won’t just get the chance to admire these charming creations — you’ll get to design and assemble your very own.

This hidden gem has what’s probably the widest selection of music boxes and music box ornaments in Singapore. It was started by owners Derrick and Chong Hui after they fell in love with the charm of music boxes during their travels, and now offers music box workshops, as well as ready-made and custom-designed music boxes.

Upon stepping into the cosy space, you’ll find the shelves lined with a huge range of meticulously crafted ornaments, featuring everything from miniature animals and Ghibli characters, to tiny houses, trains, and other adorable knick-knacks. Just imagine all the different ways you could decorate your custom music box!

The store even has ornaments for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and Christmas, so the music box could also make a great gift to celebrate a special day.

The wide array of ornaments is specially curated by the shop owners, with some of them even being handmade by the owners themselves or by local and regional artists — which means you probably won’t find them anywhere else.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a music box without music. The store offers over 40 pieces of music that you can choose from, including popular picks such as Spirited Away, River Flows in You, and Canon in D.

After choosing the base, ornaments, and music for your music box, the friendly shop owners will guide you in arranging and putting the final product together. It’s a surprisingly therapeutic experience, designing and assembling your own music box.

The cost of the music box is dependent on the materials and ornaments you pick, but it usually ranges from S$90 to S$130 — with no additional charges for instruction, workshop time, or GST.

So if you’re looking for a novel date idea or a fun thing to do with friends, here’s a unique activity to check out. You’ll even get to bring home a beautiful memento at the end of it!
