There’s a new kid on the block—a custom camera workshop at Avant-Garde Art Space located in Katong Shopping Centre where you’ll be able to paint and make your very own paper shoot camera from scratch.
If you’re unfamiliar with what a paper shoot camera is, it’s basically a sleek digital camera made out of paper (don’t worry, it’s very sturdy!). At first glance, you might think of it somewhat like a disposable camera but don’t be fooled—it produces quality 16 mega pixel film-like photos, videos and even time lapses that will be stored in an SD card.
There’s even four built-in filters for different moods: normal, black and white, sepia and blue.
The camera is also eco-friendly so you score some extra karma points for that.
Now, let’s get into what to expect at Avant-Garde Art Space.
The two-hour custom camera workshop (S$199) allows you to unleash your inner artist by firstly designing your very own paper shoot camera. You’ll be given colour pencils and pencils to sketch out any design that you like. Photorealistic scenery, cartoon-styled doodles or even portraits—you name it. Don’t worry if you’re feeling uninspired or just not sure where to start, the professionals there are super friendly and ready to guide you through every step of the way.
After you’ve finished sketching your design, you can start painting. You’re encouraged to mix your own colours with the primary colours provided so that you can learn more about colour mixing as you paint your camera, which is really cool because not all art jamming spots in Singapore really bother to help expand your technique and knowledge (in my own experience at least!).
That being said, there’s also a wide variety of ready-made colours to be used if you’d like to skip the mixing part. It’s flexible and entirely up to you.
After you’ve finished painting your camera, you’ll dry it with a hair-dryer and it’ll be brought out to be lacquered to seal it all in. Then, all that’s left to do is to assemble your camera (it’s a very simple process, even for somebody who hasn’t done it before) and you’ll be able to shoot away!
The entire process almost feels like being back in school and just letting your creativity flow in art class—except this time there’s no grades or rules to worry about. If you’re looking for something different and wholesome to do, this paper shoot camera art jamming session will probably be up your alley.
PS, you might even catch a glimpse of Merah, Avant-Garde Art Space’s resident good girl. The space is also pet-friendly, so you’re free to bring your furbabies to the workshops as well.
Time to spice up my Instagram page with some dandy film shots!
