Tucking into a bowl of bak chor mee from your favourite hawker stall is truly one of life’s simplest pleasures. And why should those on strict diets be denied it?

QiYin Teochew Minced Meat Noodles is the only place in Singapore that whips up a wicked bowl of keto-friendly bak chor mee — and it just might be the stuff of your wildest dreams.

For the uninitiated, the ketogenic (or keto) diet is one that is low in carbohydrates and high in fat, which means little to no noodles, rice, potatoes, or bread — all the good stuff.

Though many visit this Toa Payoh stall for their regular bak chor mee, or Minced Meat Noodles (from S$4.50), the Keto Bak Chor Mee (S$6.50) is the real star of the show.

In place of noodles, each bowl is generously filled with beansprouts, minced pork, sliced pork, the usual combination of vinegar, chilli, and soy sauce, and the pièce de résistance, a mountain of crunchy fried lard cubes.

You’re highly recommended to share this with a friend, or pack up the leftovers (as advised by the stall owners), especially if you don’t tolerate greasy food well.

You can even add Konjac Noodles (also known as shirataki noodles) for S$1.80 that’ll soak up all that vinegary goodness — sans the carbs.

If you prefer bak chor mee in soup version, there’s also Keto Soup (from S$6), available with or without the pork lard and konjac noodles.

Other signatures include the Laksa (S$5), which also comes in a keto version, Teochew Minced Meat Porridge (S$5.50), and Keto Meatball Soup (S$5.50).
