She Sells Seashells, Singapore’s first madeleines & financiers speciality shop, is one such example, having just opened its first artisanal bakery at HillV2.
The popular bakery, which takes inspiration from both the old tongue twister and the handcrafted madeleines (domed French sponge cakes with a distinctive shell-like shape) it is best known for, is located just a short walk from Hillview MRT station.
You can look forward to a selection of dainty French bakes in fun flavours that rotate on a monthly basis.
Loyal fans of She Sells Seashells would be familiar with the bake that started it all — the Matcha & Yuzu Madeleine (S$5.20), which features Marukyu-Koyamaen matcha powder, a Suntory Roku gin glaze (for a lil’ boozy kick), and sweet and tart yuzu peels embedded within.
Other more classic yet equally enticing madeleine flavours include the Brown Butter & Organic Vanilla Madeleine (S$3.80) and TWG French Earl Grey Madeleine (S$3.80).
As for the financiers, which are rectangular French almond cakes with a crisp, eggshell-like exterior, you can expect flavours like the Black Sesame & Kinako Financier (S$5.20), as well as the Masala Chai & Valrhona Chocolate Financier (S$4.60), a beautifully-balanced concoction infused with chai spices, luxurious Valrhona dark chocolate, and dried figs.
Be sure to keep a lookout on She Sells Seashell’s social media and Telegram channel for pre-order deets. Otherwise, you can just walk in from 12pm onwards and browse the selection of delectable bakes on display.
