I’ve written about plenty of successful eateries and restaurants that started out as home-based businesses, and Samrang in Bugis is no exception
If you’ve been itching to try out Indonesian-inspired cuisine that’s not just your usual nasi ayam penyet, tahu telor, and gado gado, a visit to the newly minted Muslim-owned restaurant might do the trick.
Samrang started as a home-based business selling bottled sambal in 2020, then expanded the menu to include dishes inspired by the Indonesian province of Semarang, before moving into a physical space along North Bridge Road.
The restaurant is best known for its Samrang Iga Bakar (Beef Ribs), massive AU/NZ high-grade beef ribs slow-cooked for 14 hours with the signature Samyang Glaze — a mainstay on the delivery (and now dine-in) menu.
You can choose to tuck into these tender, juicy, and wickedly glazed ribs in a set with Rice (S$36.90) or Indo Mee (S$38.90), alongside fried tofu, Karedok Set (Indo Salad), and a choice of sambal.
Other meaty and tasty mains include the likes of the Samrang Glazed Chicken (from S$14.90), which features an oven-baked Jumbo quarter chicken leg with signature Samrang glaze, and the slightly more unconventional Samrang Kikil Bakar (Beef Tendon, from S$22.90).
Supplement your chicken or beef with sides like Jagung Keriting (Curly Corn, S$8.90) and Bakso (S$10.90), Indonesian beef balls served with an assortment of toppings — homemade sambal geprek (smashed chilli), sambal kecap (soy chilli), or signature Samrang glaze.
The selection of desserts is not also to be missed. Kids (and those with a sweet tooth) will adore the Lumpia Pisang (S$11.90), fried banana spring rolls with your choice of toppings, which range from the decadent Condensed Milk with Cheese and Biscoff Caramel to the locally-inspired Ondeh-Ondeh and Milo Ga Dai.
Alternatively, go for the more traditional Ubi Jahe (S$7.90), fragrant tapioca served with homemade ginger syrup, or Sago Jahe (S$7.90), sago pearls with ginger syrup, jackfruit, and attap chee.
Head on down to Samrang in Bugis the next time you’re craving a taste of Indonesia!
