Simple Café reopens in Lavender with minimalist Taiwanese cafe vibes, fluffy donuts & a savoury brunch menu

by Christabel Tan

If unwinding with coffee and donuts is your idea of a perfect lazy afternoon, a visit to the newly reopened Simple Café in Lavender is a must.

Previously located at NEWest, Simple Café is now housed in the Crawford Lane unit formerly occupied by Olsen Bakehouse. It’s a lot more accessible, for sure, although I believe it will be sorely missed by folks in the West Coast area.

The space may be a lot bigger, but you can expect the same minimalist interior with clean wooden accents and peaceful “Taiwanese vibes”.

There is even a small retail section where customers can pick up packaged bakes (brown butter financiers, anyone?), tableware, and bags of coffee beans.

As always, the cafe has come through with a stunning selection of tarts, pastries, and cakes.

Aside from the usual Croissant (S$5), Pain Au Chocolate (S$6) and Kouign Amann (S$6), you won’t go wrong with the signature Satsuma, a Japanese sweet potato swiss roll, and the Lemon, a lemon curd sable tart topped with lemon pound cake.

And of course, how could one visit the cafe without ordering at least one of their signature filled donuts? Available in flavours leaning more towards the Asian palate like hojicha, earl grey, and lemon, these chewy textured donuts are filled with generous amounts of filling.

Pair those delicious bakes with a Hazelnut Espresso (S$6), Uji Matcha (S$6 for hot, S$6.50 for ice), or even the unique Pineapple Tonic (S$8), a unique concoction of homemade pineapple jam, tonic water, and espresso.

Taiwanese-inspired tea beverages include the refreshing Lemon Wintermelon (S$6.50), Osmanthus Oolong (S$5 for hot, S$6 for ice), and Longan Jujube (S$6.50).

Longtime fans of the cafe will be pleased to know that the new menu now includes hot food, with savoury offerings like soups, breakfast sets, and bagel and/or croissant-wiches. For instance, the Simple Breakfast stays true to its name with a (literally) simple yet well-executed plate of bread (choose between brioche, sourdough, a bagel, or a croissant) served with butter and jam, eggs, chicken cheese sausage and salad.

I do believe an afternoon of cafe-hopping around Lavender (with a stop at Simple Café, of course) awaits!
