Seriously, I’ve only got one mouth, so there’s no way I can taste them all (in case it wasn’t obvious, I’m a mooncake lover)!

For those like me and feeling overwhelmed about which mooncakes to get your hands on, you’ve come to the right place.

I’ve taken the liberty of hunting down the different types of mooncakes for Mid-Autumn 2024, and trust me, they’re way beyond the usual baked and snow skin classics.

1. Cat & the Fiddle

Type of mooncake: Cheese

When it comes to cheesecakes, no one does it better than Cat & the Fiddle. So, if you’re craving those savoury cheese mooncakes, this is the brand you can count on.

Their Parmesan Mooncake with Yolk Lava is silky, nutty and cheesy — sure to give you a melt-in-your-mouth moment once it’s taken out of the microwave (just 10 to 20 seconds will do!).

This cheese mooncake is included in ‘The Moonstellation Set’ (S$88.90), alongside three other flavours: Chocolate Lava, Hazelnut Mixed Paste, and Pistachio Mochi.

On a side note: the leatherette bag (available in Navy Blue and Red) that comes with the set is beyond cute and stylish enough for everyday use.

2. Home’s Favourite

Type of mooncake: Durian

Of course, I can’t write a mooncake article without mentioning the King of Fruits — durian. While durian mooncakes can be found almost everywhere, Home’s Favourite has practically become synonymous with this treat.

Their Snow Skin Premium Black Gold MSW Durian Mooncake (S$118 for 4pcs) is as indulgent as it sounds, filled with rich and creamy Old Tree Mao Shang Wang durian.

Other highlights include Snow Skin D24 Yellow Durian Mooncake (S$82 for 4pcs), Snow Skin Black Thorn Durian Mooncake (S$88 for 4pcs) and Snow Skin D13 Durian Mooncake (S$103 for 4pcs).

3. Janice Wong

Type of mooncake: Chocolate and aesthetically decorated

We can always trust Singapore’s reigning chocolatier — Janice Wong — to satisfy, well, our chocolate cravings.

The brand’s mooncake collection for 2024 brings back their crowd-favourites: Signature Chocolate, Low-sugar Baked and Snowskin.

The Chocolate Mooncake Box (S$45 for 4pcs, S$95 for 4pcs) is obviously the star of the show, consisting of Salted Caramel Cashew, Vanilla Biscoff, Peanut Gingerflower and Gula Old Fashioned (yes, there’s whiskey in this).

Plus, all these mooncakes can be works of art — hand-painted in an array of colours to produce a marble effect.

When it comes to the bakes (S$45 for 4pcs, S$95 for 8pcs), be sure to try the Kuromitsu Sea Salt for a savoury twist and the Kinako Macadamia for a nutty delight.

Their snowskin mooncakes (S$45 for 4pcs, S$95 for 8pcs) also capture their fair share of attention, with each piece containing a truffle ball in the middle.

You’ll get four flavours: Sweet Potato Cashew, Hojicha Chestnut Coffee, Kinako Macadamia and Matcha Yuzu.

4. Mdm Ling Bakery

Type of mooncake: Local-inspired

While most people flock to Mdm Ling Bakery for their CNY snacks, their mooncakes are just as impressive.

Their unique Kueh Lapis Mooncake (S$60.80 for 4pcs) does justice to the favourite local snack and comes in flavours like Belgian Chocolate, Mango and Fragrant Pandan.

Oh, and they’ve upsized them by 50% from last year, so get ready to open wide!

They also offer baked mooncakes in Traditional White Lotus with Melon Seeds and/or Salted Yolk (from S$33.80 for 2pcs) for a more premium option. For their signatures, don’t miss Black Sesame Peanut Butter and Red Dates Longan.

When it comes to their snow skin varieties, they’re a little more out-there with flavours like Popping Candy, Lime and Elderflower and Cream Cheese.

5. Swensen’s

Type of mooncake: Ice cream

Swensen’s newly improved mochi-snowskin ice cream mooncakes all come in sets of four, including an option to create your own (starting from S$50).

You can mix and match from eight flavours: Mao Shang Wang, Sticky Chewy Chocolate, Cookies ‘N’ Cream, Strawrry, Durian King, Genmaicha, Ube and Lychee Rose.

This year, Swensen’s is taking ‘mooncakes’ literally by releasing their new moon-shaped ice cream cakes.

Both the Super Moon and Micro Moon Ice Cream Cakes (940g, S$68.80 each) feature a salted egg yolk bon bon in the middle, with the former filled with Sticky Chewy Chocolate and the latter with Cookies ‘N’ Cream.

And, you can enjoy all of this at 10% off for Citibank, DBS, Diners Club (DCS), HSBC and OCBC cardholders, and 15% off for Swensen’s Cool Rewards members.

6. Hai Tien Lo

Type of mooncake: For gifting

Mooncakes don’t have to be expensive and Rive Gauche Patisserie is here to prove that.

Their six-piece Luna Tea Mouse Series (S$36) consists of four flavours: Pomelo Oolong Tea with White Peach, Roobios Tea with Raspberry Lychee, Earl Grey Tea with Dark Chocolate and Raspberry, and Osmanthus Paochong Tea with Pistachio and Strawberry.

Clad in maroon red, the gold-rimmed, vintage chest comes imprinted with a Hogwarts logo — an uncanny resemblance to Harry’s personal Hogwarts trunk. While we won’t be passing through Platform 9 ¾ anytime soon, the chest holds enough magic to transport any Muggle into the Harry Potter universe.

Four mooncakes sit quietly in its interior, each presenting a Hogwarts house — Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin.

Each purchase also comes with an official certificate, declaring the chest as an official product of the Wizarding World. Something even Voldemort recognises as a prized possession.

For those with more Galleons and Knuts to spare, opt for The Harry Potter Collector’s Edition Chest which comes with four limited-edition ceramic plates, each donning the house’s logo.

The ferocious Gryffindor is intricately made into a Red Yam Lotus Single Yolk Mooncake; Slytherin, an envious Matcha Black Sesame with Black & White Sesame Seeds; Ravenclaw, an intelligent Blue Pea Pu-Er Lotus with Melon Seeds; and Hufflepuff, an adorable Pumpkin White Lotus with Double Yolk. 

While mooncakes are known for their exorbitant prices, this is one collection that’ll be worth its cost.

The Harry Potter Mooncake Chest costs S$128, while The Harry Potter Collector’s Edition Chest will set you back S$168.
