Although we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to Japanese ramen options, a single bowl can go up to S$16 or more. In that sense, Tamako Ramen-ya is one of a kind. If you’re looking for ramen that won’t break the bank, this unassuming stall at Ci Yuan Community Club Hawker Centre in Hougang has all you need. Hint: S$5.80 ramen.
Classic ramen and side dishes
There are several types of ramen available, from the tried-and-tested Traditional Shoyu Ramen (S$5.80) to the more fusion Sambal Tonkotsu Ramen (S$5.80). They also offer Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen (S$6.80) if you’re in the mood for something more premium.
Pair your ramen with a side dish or two like Age Gyoza (S$2.80 for 4pcs) and Mini Tako (S$4.80). We hear reviews for the comforting Housemade Potato Salad (S$3) are pretty damn good.
Don’t expect meagre portions for the low price; every bowl of S$5.80 ramen comes with the customary toppings of seaweed, bamboo shoots, fishcakes, cha shu, and half a ramen egg, enough to feed a grown man. Now, that’s value-for-money.
So, when are you going to check out this hidden hawker gem?
