Iconic cinematic landmark The Cathay is back with food galore, a 3-floor multimedia screen, 24/7 Fitness, Wingstop, Kebuke, Miniso and more

After nearly two years of renovation, The Cathay opened its long-awaited doors to the public on 28 March 2025.

For my fellow clueless Gen Zs, this iconic building in Dhoby Ghaut was originally built in 1939. And, guess what? It was Singapore’s first air-conditioned cinema.

Honestly, I can’t imagine watching a movie at a cinema without air-conditioning, so props to everyone who had that experience.

Residents nearby will be glad to recognise the original theatre building, which has been retained as a tribute to Singapore’s cinematic history.

However, the building now provides a modern shopping experience with lifestyle brands Miniso and IUIGA

There’s also the Indonesian coffee chain Fore Coffee, Taiwanese tea shop Kebuke, and everybody’s favourite Wingstop

Other than a sky garden at Level 4, there’s a three-floor multimedia display spanning the lower floors. Enjoy high-quality motion graphics along the grand steps of the atrium leading from Level 1 to Basement 1.

Most of the stores are still under work so I’d give it some time before heading down. Still, here’s what you can look forward to.

Ironically, there’s been no word on whether a cinema will reopen in this iconic cinematic landmark, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

So, will you be planning a trip to this historic monument-turn mall?
