The Pound is a humble Korean-owned cafe selling rustic cakes & coffee along Beach Road

Sometimes, the best self-care comes in the form of cake. And for some strange reason, cake tastes best when you least expect it. I don’t know about fate, but a missed appointment led me to The Pound, a Korean cafe hidden within Sultan Plaza I’d been meaning to check out for the longest time.

If not for the location and transparent glass (which takes away from the overall ambience), the vibes would’ve been immaculate. You definitely won’t feel like you’re in Hongdae, but it’s still a cosy space to catch up with a friend over coffee nonetheless.

Having visited in the late afternoon, there wasn’t much to choose from. The bestsellers were all sold-out, but I was happy to have made it before closing. Besides, it’s a one-woman show most of the time — the Korean lady boss bakes cakes, makes coffee, and serves guests all by herself.

My dining partner opted for an Iced Hazelnut Latte (S$7) and a slice of Earl Grey (S$5.50). Though on the subtle side, flavour-wise, the cake was balanced out by pops of citrus and a light, delicate cream that blew us away.

As a matcha fanatic, I immediately zeroed in on the bittersweet Matcha Roll (S$5.50), matcha chiffon layered with matcha cream and matcha white chocolate glaze. Once again, the light-as-air cream was the highlight.

Don’t be like me. Turn up early and you’ll get to choose from the full cake selection, which changes from time to time. I’ve seen raving reviews for the Strawberry Roll (S$5.50), Tiramisu (S$5.50), and earthy Black Sesame (S$5.50).

You can also purchase Whole Cakes (from S$42) in flavours like Sweet Potato, Red Velvet, and Strawberry. Contact The Pound via email or Whatsapp to make an order — details can be found on their Instagram page.

They also specialise in Iced Dutch Coffee (from S$4), so I’ve got to return at a reasonable hour (before my caffeine intolerance kicks in).
