Wang Family Kitchen has homely and value-for-money Korean set menus with dishes like fried chicken, pumpkin croquettes & cold noodles that change daily

As much as Korean food has secured a permanent spot in my list of “top three all-time favourite cuisines”, Korean homestyle cooking is something I’ve yet to properly experience.

But that may soon change, given that I’ve found a spot worth travelling to Hillview for — Wang Family Kitchen.

Tucked away in Hillview Community Club, the Korean-owned restaurant has earned a reputation for dishing up homely, comforting, and value-for-money Korean fare with no GST or service charge.

Although a self-service buffet concept was previously offered, the restaurant now sells individual set meals priced at S$18.90 nett, consisting of nine different dishes with rice, a soup of the day, and even dessert, which change every day.

That’s right — there is no fixed menu available here. You come here, order a set, and eat whatever you are served. Kinda like omakase.

Although the menu is different every day, you can expect recurring favourites such as fried chicken, bulgogi, noodles, and Korean pancakes, alongside banchan (side dishes) like radish kimchi, rolled omelette (gyeranmari), and homemade Korean-style mashed potato.

You might even spot the occasional Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), Kimchi Stew, or Gimbap on the specials menu.

For instance, the menu served on 18 May 2023 included the likes of Candied Sweet Potato, Fried Chicken in Sour Soy Sauce (Youlinji), Sweet Pumpkin Croquette, and Pork Bulgogi.

Simply refer to the restaurant’s social media pages for the daily menu, which also includes takeaway options.

Oh, and all set meals are served with fresh fruit and their signature homemade waffle, which boasts a chewy mochi-like texture — it is really, really highly raved about!

I can’t wait to visit, and so should you.

Reservations can be made via Whatsapp — simply refer to their Facebook page for more deets.
