The latest of their ventures is the Superstar Café and Boutique, a newly opened Sanrio-themed store by Universal Studios Singapore.

At first sight, the place looks like a mix of retro diner and Barbie, with pastel pink lining every corner of the store. The retail section is stocked with shelves full of themed stationery, accessories, and collectables that feature the most iconic Sanrio characters. 

Some of our favourites include the adorable Cinnamonroll sling bags, Kuromi varsity jackets, and the Hello Kitty and My Melody caps. The incredible range of merchandise and designs means there will be something for everyone, whether it’s a maximalist character bag for your child or a more subtle souvenir to add a pop of cuteness to your life.

The café section stays right on theme with its food, with the fluffy character-inspired bombolones, Italian stuffed doughnuts, taking centre stage. It comes in 5 flavours, each representing a character—blueberry for Kuromi, strawberry for My Melody, apple cinnamon for Cinnamonroll, mango for Pompompurin, and raspberry for Hello Kitty (S$9.50 each).  

Other sweet creations include the 3 lattes—Pompompurin Caramel Latte (S$10), Cinnamoroll Vanilla Latte (S$10), Kuromi Dark Chocolate Latte (S$10)—served with a layer of smooth foam and the character motif stamped on top.

You may also come face-to-face with your favourite characters as the store is hosting Meet and Greet sessions. Beyond that, you’ll find plenty of fun photo spots that are perfect for the feed.

In fact, from 4 May 2026 to 17 May 2026, one of our local Chinese Dance companies, the Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre, is holding its 11th edition of the Chinese Dance Fiesta. This year, the festival will showcase 6 Chinese dance performances held across Singapore, as well as workshops and discussion sessions with the esteemed Professor Ma Jiaqin, China’s first-grade choreographer and founding dean of Nanjing University of the Arts’ Dance Academy.

If you’re looking for some cultural enrichment to brighten up your life, here’s what to expect. 

Chinese Dance Performances 

On 8 May 2026, catch hardworking young dancers from primary, secondary and tertiary school groups such as Ngee Ann Polytechnic, St Tanjong Katong Primary School, and Dance Ensemble Singapore, celebrate Chinese heritage with captivating performances. Don’t underestimate them because of their age; these youths are just as passionate as any adult dancers.

On 9 May 2026, local troupes and companies will be putting up a show, allowing us an opportunity to support our homegrown talents. As these artists continue to preserve Singapore’s traditions and cultures, make sure you head down to witness the rewards of their hard work!

These performances are taking place in Esplanade’s outdoor theatre. Find more information here! 

The festival then continues across the island with these shows:

Most of these shows are free with no registration required except for the VivoCity Amphitheatre. Although it’s already fully booked, you may still join the waitlist for an opportunity to watch dancers from Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and Sheng Hong Arts Institute perform.

Dance workshop and talks

Beyond the performances, the festival offers 2 introductory workshops to Kunwu Dance, a contemporary style of classical Chinese dance. 

The first is a 4-day intensive (S$300) catered to experienced dancers. The second is a 2-hour beginner-friendly workshop (S$10) held on 9 May 2026 that introduces attendees to the foundations of Kunwu Dance. If dance and Chinese culture are something you’ve always wanted to learn more about, this is a unique opportunity to experience them in-depth.

There’s also a 30-minute talk-demonstration, where Professor Ma shares insights into the philosophy and techniques behind Kunwu Dance. It’s perfect if you’re keen to learn more but can’t join the dance workshop.

Landing at ION Orchard from 8 May for a limited-time pop-up, Cheese Wonder arrives with serious buzz. Back in Japan, the brand is known for being highly limited and has built a near cult-like following, with its signature cheese cakes selling out within minutes. It’s not just hype due to the lack of it—this is a dessert concept rooted in precision, quality, and a quietly confident kind of indulgence.

At the heart of it all is their namesake creation: the Cheese Wonder cake. These petite, cube-shaped treats are non-baked, with layers of cream cheese fillings (souffle and mousse) carefully piped into an almond cookie crust. Each piece is frozen at peak freshness, then enjoyed frozen, slightly thawed, or at room temperature. They look almost too pretty to eat—clean lines, delicate layers, a quiet kind of elegance.

For the Singapore pop-up, fans can look forward to a curated lineup of their bestsellers. The signature no-bake cheesecakes will be available in two variations: a four-piece set in a thermal bag ($35.90), or a six-piece set presented in a gift box ($53.90). 

There’s also the Wonder Sand ($35.90 for eight pieces), an artsy wavy cookie filled with buttercream and cream cheese—equal parts crisp and creamy. If strawberries are your weakness, keep an eye out for the seasonal Cheese Wonder Red ($42.90 for four pieces). A whole Japanese strawberry wrapped in a fluffy strawberry-infused cheese mousse and topped with a light cheese souffle layer, a classic pairing of fruit and cheese in an elegant bite.

Beyond the flavors, what makes Cheese Wonder especially compelling is the philosophy behind it. Guided by the theme of “GRAZE EXPERIMENTS”, the brand went a step further than sourcing premium ingredients—they chose to produce them. The milk used in their cheesecakes comes from free-range dairy farming, while the eggs are from free-range chickens. In a thoughtful twist, the chickens there are fed with leftover cake and cookie crumbs from confectionery production, creating a full-circle ecosystem that enhances the quality of the eggs. Through this cycle between cows and soil, pastures and poultry, and farms and confectionery, Cheese Wonder has built a quietly sustainable model that reflects both care and craft.

Quantities will be limited daily, so those planning to try it might want to head down early. If Japan’s sell-out streak is anything to go by, hesitation may come at a cost.

As a cornerstone of local culture, many hawkers have quietly preserved generational recipes that have stood the test of time. While many of us grew up enjoying their fare, few truly realise the history and significance behind each plate. 

A stall rooted in heritage 

Xin Sheng Ngoh Hiong Prawn Cracker is one example. The stall started as a humble street food stand in the 1950s, selling its food out of a simple wooden cart. Today, the family business has passed on to its 3rd generation. Their two stalls are now manned by 2nd-generation owner Anthony Low, who runs the store in Boon Lay, and 3rd-generation owner Matthew Liu, who runs the store in Taman Jurong. 

To this family, their food serves as a connection to the older generation of Singaporeans, many of whose childhoods were shaped by these traditional, crispy golden snacks. Even now, as the culinary scene evolves to accommodate new trends and dietary fads, they take pride in sharing their traditional roots while embracing change to stay relevant.

Fresh from the wok

The Ngoh Hiong store draws customers in with an appealing display that includes Prawn Crackers, Taiwanese Sausages, Chicken Wings, and, of course, Ngoh Hiong—a Hokkien or Teochew dish made with minced pork or prawn, wrapped in tofu skin and deep-fried.

Customers can grab a pair of tongs and pile their plates with their favourites. The selection is then deep-fried in a massive wok, cut into bite-sized pieces, and served piping hot with a side of chilli and sweet sauce. To complement the fritters, the store sells Bee-Hoon, whose mellow flavour and soft texture perfectly balance out the flavourful fried bites.

Signature picks 

If you visit, some must-try dishes include the signature Ngoh Hiong, which has a juicy, meaty centre that explodes with flavour behind a crisp exterior. Their Crispy Prawn Cracker offers a satisfying crunch along with a delightful briny taste. The Spring Rolls and Yam Rolls offer a delightful contrast with their light, crisp exterior and soft, flavourful inside. While deep-fried, they still maintain an airiness and don’t feel too greasy. 

In a culinary scene where food trends come and go, stalls like Xin Sheng Ngoh Hiong Prawn Cracker carry decades of tradition and history. If you’re looking to experience an authentic old-school hawker experience, this stall is definitely worth visiting.
