Somewhere along the way, the Internet decided that October should be called “Spooktober” – because Halloween falls on the month’s last day. This has prompted many companies and establishments to host themed events and activities.
But what if you prefer spending time at home or online with friends? This is where video games shine. With Steam’s Scream V Fest and Epic Games’ Halloween Sale happening right now, you might be looking for a game or two to scratch that horror itch.
We looked through the catalogue and curated a list of recommendations that carry intense gameplay, spooky atmosphere, and thrilling moments. Single-player and multiplayer PC games are included, and some even go beyond the horror genre. Keep reading and see if you agree with our picks!

If you’re brave enough to face horrors on your own (unlike me), these games will be right up your alley. Fair warning – they might keep you up all night!
Resident Evil 2

One of the most popular horror themes has always been Zombies. So let’s kick off our list with a game that features these undead, virus-stricken, relentless creatures. And trust me, it’s a real spooky one.
Many of you might remember the Resident Evil series for its blend of action and horror, and you wouldn’t be wrong. But the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 (RE2) takes players back to the series’ origins, which are mostly rooted in horror.
You play as two protagonists, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, in a survival horror experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Expect long dark corridors, creepy enclosed spaces, and intense encounters with a deadly virus outbreak. If you enjoyed the latest Resident Evil movie, it’s time to check out the source material.
RE2 is available at 80% off on Steam until 2am on 4 November 2026 for just S$9.98. There’s no better time to visit Raccoon City.

Metro Exodus

This one’s terrifying too. Metro Exodus is the third game in the Metro series and its latest, before the upcoming Metro 2039. This immersive first-person shooter (FPS) will place you in a post-apocalyptic Russian landscape full of bad guys and mutated beasts. Beautiful – but definitely not on your vacation list.
The most intense moments are probably when you are deep in the Metro tunnels, low on ammo and resources, trying to sneak around “unfriendly” inhabitants. What is also interesting is that the game’s story takes place over a one-year period, which means you will experience all 4 seasons in this thrilling adventure.
Metro Exodus is currently at a 90% discount on Epic Games until 1am on 10 November 2026, and is available for just S$3.90.

Subnautica

Subnautica is not exactly labelled a horror game, but I reckon it has given and will continue to give many people nightmares. If you have thalassophobia – or a fear of deep bodies of water – think twice before diving into this one.
The premise is that you crash-landed on an alien ocean planet and need to survive by gathering resources underwater. You will fight to find food, water, and oxygen, while building equipment and habitats.
At the same time, you will explore the depths of this mysterious planet and seek a way out. But beware. Mysteries and resources are not the only things lurking in the deep. You might not like what you uncover.
Subnautica is currently at a 75% discount on both Steam and Epic Games for just S$10. The sale ends on 3 November 2026 for both platforms, at 2am and 12am respectively. Subnautica’s sequel, Subnautica 2, is also available in Early Access for S$40.

Alan Wake (series)

Of all the single-player games I’ve listed here, Alan Wake is the only one I’ve survived and actually beat. RE2 and Metro Exodus sit in my games library, waiting for the day I feel courageous enough again.
But the funny thing is, Alan Wake and its 2023 sequel Alan Wake 2 might be the “purest” horror games of the bunch. Specifically, they belong to the psychological horror genre, which basically means what you experience might mess with your head a little bit.
I can’t speak for the second game as I have yet to play it, but the first is kind of a classic. It puts you into the shoes of the titular best-selling writer, searching for his missing wife in a strange small town.
Your only obstacles are scary pages from a manuscript you wrote coming to life, and a Dark Presence constantly stalking you. Your only defence? A gun and a torchlight. The game’s story is presented like a TV series, with a compelling narrative that leaves you wanting to know more.
Both Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2 are part of the Epic Games Halloween Sale until 12am on 3 November 2026, and are available at 85% and 70% discounts. If you’ve never experienced these games before, you can begin with just S$1.94 for the first game. A remastered version is also currently available for S$4.04. Face your fears and fight the darkness with Light.

Best in Co-op
When it comes to horror games, there’s nothing like playing with a bunch of friends. If you’re a scaredy-cat like me, having buddies with you definitely helps to alleviate some of that fear. At the same time, cooperative (co-op) gameplay creates tons of opportunities for chaos and shenanigans. Maybe that’s the real horror for some of you.
The Outlast Trials

This one might genuinely disturb some. The Outlast Trials puts you and up to 3 other players in a facility where unethical and inhumane experiments are being conducted. Together (or alone), you will need to complete trials while avoiding the facility’s insane inhabitants.
Will you escape unscathed? There’s only one way to find out. The Outlast Trials is now available for S$10.20 until 3 November, 2am, on Steam, and S$9.35 until 3 November, 12am, on Epic Games.

Backrooms: Escape Together

There are a couple of games on Steam based on The Backrooms, a creepypasta known for its unsettling, endless, liminal spaces. The concept, first introduced in 2019, has since grown into a popular web series and an A24 feature film released earlier this year.
But what if you wanted to explore the famous, yellowish corridors yourself? Backrooms: Escape Together is the game that intrigues me the most out of all the options available. Firstly, the game looks photorealistic. It’s probably the most visually appealing and immersive Backrooms game out there.
Secondly, the game’s 12 levels are procedurally generated, randomising room layouts, puzzles, and encounters with “entities”. Every time you play is a different experience. Also, you can play with up to 5 other friends in 6-player co-op. Just imagine all the chaos and fun.
Backrooms: Escape Together is now 30% off on Steam for S$7, until 2am on 3 November 2026.

(Bonus!) Left 4 Dead 2

There’s a reason Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) still has such a strong player base 17 years after release. The game is considered one of the best co-op FPS games of all time, and definitely still takes the crown today in the zombies genre.
This game is currently not on sale, but it’s too iconic not to feature on a list like this, so I thought I’d include it as a bonus entry. Besides, even at full price, it still just costs S$10.49.
If you’ve never played L4D2, gather up to 3 friends and get into it. Even though the game can be played alone, nothing beats fighting off waves of the infected with your mates. Hours of replayable campaigns, game modes, and fun (and laughter) await. What are you waiting for?
Found the scary game of your choice yet? Have fun and stay sane!
