Korean-inspired cafes are aplenty, but actual cafes from Korea are a little harder to come by.
Cafe BomBom, a popular dessert cafe chain from South Korea, has opened its first international outpost in good ol’ Tampines selling thick Korean-style macarons, bingsu, and flavoured beverages.
The chain first opened in Daegu in 2012 as a takeaway-only cafe and has since branched out into over 400 affiliated outlets across South Korea.
We’re lucky — we get to enjoy their popular hot and iced beverages and speciality desserts within a cheery yellow-hued interior in Tampines 1. Even better if you’re a fan of Korean singer and actor Kim Dong-jun, who happens to be the face of the brand (swoon!).
What sets Cafe BomBom’s Korean-style macarons (otherwise known as bomcarons) apart from the typical macarons you can find in Singapore is that they are not only bigger but also less sweet!
There are five flavours of thick and colourful cream-filled Bomcarons (S$4.90) to choose from — Oreo, Cheese, Strawberry, Chocolate, and Vanilla. Not only are they tasty, but they also make for an adorable gift.
You can also indulge in individual-sized bingsu, such as the Dalgona Bing Su (S$7.60) and K-Ogok Bing Su (S$7.60) topped with red bean and injeolmi.
But of course, a visit to the cafe is not complete without a drink or two — there are over 40 types of coffee, lattes, frappes, soda, yogurt smoothies, and signature drinks to choose from. Go for the signature Bom Blanc (S$6.80), a creamy latte with three shots of espresso, or the foam-topped Sea Salt Blanc (S$7.50), a unique concoction only available at the Jeju Island outlet.
Other bestsellers include the Sweet Potato Latte (from S$6), Lemon Soda (from S$5.50), Bomb Frappe (from S$7.80), and Mango Smoothie (S$7.80)
