“When I’m free, I take myself to Don Don Donki / All my dreams come true, they do, whenever I go there“
Although I can barely stand hearing the jingle over and over again, a Don Don Donki is always a welcoming sight. It comes as no surprise, but the Japanese discount chain has opened its 15th outlet at Jewel Changi Airport.
Although the 14th outlet opened only last month (November 2022) in Jurong Point, I’ve never been happier to see yet another Don Don Donki in the East (yay for me!).
However, this is no regular Donki outlet — it is massive, it is aviation-themed, and it features an array of exciting dining options, exclusive products, and so much more.
Exclusive travel & beauty products
If you’re constantly running out the door without your essentials in hand, worry no more!
The health and beauty section here is huge and comes stocked with an extensive selection of beauty, wellness, and skincare products, from themed character bath bombs to exclusive edition face masks.
Given that this is Don Don Donki Jewel, you can also expect a variety of practical travel and travel-sized items, including the likes of luggage covers, neck pillows, and tiny containers for toiletries.
First-ever halal corner
Making its first appearance in Singapore is a dedicated halal section (you may have seen ’em at outlets in Malaysia) where you can find a specially curated range of over 100 halal Japanese products.
Aside from the usual Japanese drinks, snacks, instant noodles, cooking ingredients, and frozen food items, you can also keep a lookout for unique products like Drinking Jelly, Sweet Potato Cake, and organic matcha powder.
Japanese dining hall
It’s hard to go wrong with Donki’s ready-to-eat meals like sushi, sashimi, and hot food, but why not take it up a notch by filling up at this proper Japanese dining hall?
One of the two new dining concepts is Senraku Deli, which sells affordable and customisable made-to-order bento sets (from S$8.90). DIY your own bento by choosing from hot and cold side dishes like Aji Fry (S$3.90), Beef Sukiyaki (S$6.90), and Potato Salad (S$2.90).
If takoyaki and the popular wagyu kushi skewers are what you seek, look no further than Agedako, or Fried Octopus Ball, which specialises in the popular grilled snack from Osaka.
Sushi fans are in luck, as casual made-to-order sushi concept SEN SEN Sushi, which was first launched at Jurong Point, has also landed at Don Don Donki Jewel.
Tuck into a Jewel-exclusive menu featuring varieties of honmaguro (fresh bluefin tuna), shiromi (white fish), and Atlantic salmon in the form of nigiri or hoso maki (thin sushi rolls).
A decent selection of sets are also available — we highly recommend the Sakura Sushi Set (S$23.80 for 8pcs) comprising salmon, scallop, ikura, different types of honmaguro, and anago, if you want to try a bit of everything.
If you’re in the mood for sashimi, you can order either Fresh Salmon Sashimi Slices (S$15 for 8pcs) or Fresh Salmon Belly Slices (S$15.80 for 10pcs), both of which are pretty value-for-money.
Those who prefer to eat on the go can head on down to takeaway kiosk Tomita Seimei for their fix of assorted onirigi prepared using freshly milled premium Japanese rice.
For something different, why not try the unique Grilled Isobe Mochi, a sweet-savoury grilled seaweed-wrapped mochi coated in soy sauce and sugar?
Wash it all down with sake, Jewel-exclusive premium whisky, or an ice-cold beer at the sake bar, which boasts around 40 varieties of Japanese sake.
Whether you prefer to drink your sake neat, on the rocks, or with soda, you’re bound to find a tipple that tickles your fancy.
Happy Hour here lasts till 7pm, so those looking to have a drink that won’t break the bank before their evening (or even morning) flight can head on down!
Alternatively, end off with a sweet treat from the Furu Furu Fruits Parlour, a takeaway kiosk selling freshly-squeezed juices (like Japanese Orange Soda, Strawberry, and Grape) and Fruits Ice Kachang (a spin on kakigori, or Japanese shaved ice) in flavours like Matcha and Melon.
You can also indulge in desserts like cakes, daifuku, and Handmade Fruit Jelly (S$3.90) — perfect for gifting friends and family arriving from abroad.
There is plenty to eat, see, and buy at this highly-anticipated store in Jewel Changi Airport, so what are you waiting for? I’ll see you there!
