Have unfortunately yet to make Taiwan travel plans (no thanks to skyrocketing flight ticket prices)?
If you’re constantly on the lookout for authentic and affordable Taiwanese cuisine, it’s high time you put Hei Lun Shi Tang in Queensway Shopping Centre on your radar.
Run by the folks behind Sunya & Satya Co. (also located in the same mall), the tiny and relatively hidden eatery dishes up homely, no-frills Taiwanese fare — the kind a Taiwanese mum would make at home.
Head straight for the selection of bento (from S$5.50 for small) served in old-school tin lunchboxes. The signature Braised Pork (lu rou fan), which boasts tender, flavourful, and not-too-oily minced pork, is a must-order.
Other options include the Braised Pork Belly and Fried Chicken Bento, as well as the Curry Braised Pork Rice (from S$7.50), which comes slathered in “Taiwanese-style curry” — we hear it tastes just like Japanese curry.
All bento boxes come with carrot, cabbage, shiitake mushroom, pickled mustard greens, and a braised egg, making for a wholesome and filling meal.
Feel free to top up S$1 for a Bento & Drink Set and S$1.50 for a Bento & Mini Soup Set; the soup of the day changes daily, but you can always count on it to be slurp-worthy and super nourishing.
Those who prefer noodles to rice can go for the Braised Pork Noodles (S$5.50) and Taiwanese Curry Noodles (S$6.50), or keep it simple with the vegetarian-friendly Scallion Oil Noodles (S$3.50).
You can also find another Hei Lun Shi Tang outlet at Wisteria Mall in Yishun, if that’s more convenient for you.
