Can’t get enough of affordable yet authentic Japanese cuisine? Minami Maki in Alexandra is a humble hidden gem you may not have heard about.

Located in Alexandra Central Mall (yes, the one beside IKEA Alexandra), the casual no-frills eatery may not be much of a looker, but it makes up for it with an extensive selection of sushi, sashimi, and Japanese bites. Seating is limited, so be prepared to wait during peak hours, or opt for takeaway.

Although you can find sushi rolls like nigiri and hosomaki here, the makimono (maki rolls) is the star of the show. Head straight for the Signature 2 (S$11.80), consisting of tempura prawn, egg, cucumber, crabstick, and avocado, topped with homemade spicy sauce, awanori, and furikake.
Alternatively, go for the sweet and umami Unagi Roll (S$14.80) or the Crispy Roll (S$13), which boasts crispy salmon skin — a much-needed textural contrast.

Got a hankering for a good chirashi don? The Deluxe Chirashi (S$23), served with fresh and plump slices of assorted sashimi, is your best bet. Otherwise, pick your poison (fish) of choice, which may come in the form of an Ootoro Chirashi (S$35), Negitoro Chirashi (S$14.80), or the salmon-based Shake Chirashi (S$10.80).
Make it a set meal (inclusive of soup, salad, and a drink of choice) for an additional S$3.

Complement those delectable rice dishes with al carte options like oysters, tempura, and beautifully plated seasonal sashimi platters (we hear the Fugu Mirin Boshi, or grilled dried puffer fish, makes for the perfect bar snack).
The next time you need to fuel up after furniture shopping, you know where to go.
