You can finally take a sheltered walk at Night Safari with its Pangolin Trail and experience underwater dining alongside sea lions at Singapore Zoo’s marine habitat

I’m not gonna lie, I’m thoroughly impressed with how world-class our Singapore Zoo is.

For such a small country, the fact that our zoo has consistently made the list of best zoos in the world and has even been dubbed as the best in Asia is worthy of commendation.

It seems that they are looking to retain their position as Singapore Zoo and, by extension Night Safari, are coming up with new public displays to continue entertaining the crowd. Plus, it’s Night Safari’s 30th anniversary this year, so that plays a part.

At the world’s first nocturnal zoo, you can look forward to a new 280m-long walking trail. It isn’t long (non-athletic folk are probably rejoicing) but the trail will be the first that’s not just sheltered, but also home to a bunch of wildlife like the Sunda pangolin, slow loris, binturong and red giant flying squirrel.

If you’ve not seen a Sunda pangolin, I’d say it’s the closest thing to a reptilian armadillo. This is because the critically endangered Southeast-Asian native would curl up into a ball like an armadillo but has a more scaly exterior.

You’ll feel some homegrown pride when you realise that Night Safari is the first zoological facility in the world to successfully care for and even breed the Sunda pangolin.

At the time of writing, the opening date of the Pangolin Trail has yet to be announced.

Since Chawang, a 4.5-tonne male Asian elephant, is Night Safari’s icon, it only makes sense that he receives a spanking new home. His bull elephant habitat has gotten a revamp, featuring an innovative ‘stable grazer’ that keeps him on his toes by dispensing food unpredictably.

You also can now get up close and personal with Chawang thanks to a new observation deck.

Don’t forget about Singapore Zoo as they’ve something to show off too! For those who’ve yet to experience underwater dining, you can finally do so at their new marine coastal habitat that’s set to open in 2027.

It’s still a long way to go but good things come to those who wait, so be patient. Once the two-storey enclosure is finished, you’ll get to dine alongside Californian sea lions, African penguins and harbor seals, to name a few.

On the first floor, you’ll find a fine-dining restaurant that promises an upscale experience. However, if you’re in the mood for something more laid-back, head up to the second floor where a bistro awaits, offering vantage views of the animals.

And don’t miss the elevated terrace outside the bistro, where you can enjoy the zoo’s signature dining programme — Breakfast in the Wild — every morning. As you dig into your hearty meals, see how the adventurous orangutans climb and swing around.

If you’re someone who’s into a zoo wedding (I’m not judging, by the way), you can consider booking the new 400-seater event space located just next door. The name has yet to be released but we know for sure that it’ll be twice the size of the current Forest Lodge venue.

I guess it’s time to head to the zoo once again.

Which animals will you greet first?
