Spend the afternoon with kitties at The Cat Cafe

A dog’s love is unconditional, but if you’ve managed to earn the affection of a cat, you’re probably a saint. To test if you’re truly virtuous, make a visit to The Cat Cafe at Railmall where you’ll be judged by a panel of 14 rescued kitties.

The interior of the cafe is kept pretty simple, but take a closer look and you’ll find many obstacles on the walls for the felines to play on. The place is also littered with cat posts and toys, a true haven for these devils.

Entry will cost S$16 per customer and you’ll be granted two hours with the kitties and a complimentary soft drink. Other bakes are also available for sale, just in case you’re feeling peckish — but don’t leave your food unattended!

Take a photoshoot or hike along Rail Corridor

For those who do not know, the Rail Corridor is a nature trail along the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway line connecting Singapore and Malaysia. The Malaysian rail service ceased operations in 2011, leaving the place as an icon that all hipsters and fitspos are familiar with.

The 4km section stretches from The Rail Mall to the conserved Bukit Timah Railway Station near King Albert Park MRT station, allowing you to stop and admire landmarks such as the Hillview Bridge, the Upper Bukit Timah Road truss bridge, and the Singapore Quarry Bridge along the way.

Since there are eight access points to the rail tracks, you can hop off this rustic trail whenever you like and head for some refreshments. Our ultimate guide also leads to Beauty World, so if you’re planning for a pit stop nearby, read on!

Trek to Singapore Quarry

For those living in the West, it’s not uncommon to hike up Singapore’s highest point at Bukit Timah Hill. But for a change of pace, try trekking to Singapore Quarry instead.

The vast lake is home to plenty of fishes and small reptiles such as tortoises and monitor lizards, and you’ll even get to see rarer species of birds here.

For those that live for the gram’, there’s also a boardwalk that’ll provide photo ops. 

To reach the place, take the concrete track starting from the entrance near car park A. The distance is about 1.3km and will take around 30 minutes to reach. 

Do wear proper shoes as the terrain here can get rocky!

Things to eat in Hillview

iO Italian Osteria — Modern-day tavern with truffle stuffed bread

It can be disappointing to visit a restaurant for its ‘authentic’ food only to be let down. But at iO Italian Osteria, there’ll be no such baloney. The modern-day tavern serves up some of the best Italian nosh in Singapore, and even has daily fresh bakes that always draw snaking queues. 

For starters, try the Traditional Stuffed Roman Schiacciata (S$10). Generously loaded with truffle cream, the Italian flatbread is served in golden, thin-crusted sheets. 

You can’t say that you visited an Italian restaurant if you didn’t have pasta, so go for the Homemade Tagliolini with prawns, asparagus, lemon, and aromatic breadcrumbs (S$22). Expect a perfect al-dente texture with crunchy prawns, all tossed in a special umami sauce.

Coexist Coffee Co. — Hidden rooftop cafe with split colours 

Nestled on the eighth floor of Hillview Terrace, Coexist Coffee Co. is a true hideout for the westies. The place used to be a canteen which serves the building’s tenants, but has since been refurbished to welcome this new baby.

Most cafes that choose red and white for their interior design scream “Majulah Singapura”, even if unintentionally. But if anything, this dual-toned cafe looks chic and rustic — the stuff of Instagram dreams. 

Over at Coexist Coffee Co., they have a variety of fusion dishes, including Rendang Wagyu Beef Burger (S$22), Sambal Fish & Chips (S$20), and the Middle Eastern Chili Crab Shakshuka (S$16).

Filled with chunks of juicy crab meat, a power-packed chili crab sauce, and topped with a poached egg and mantou, the Chili Crab Shakshuka is one of the must-tries at the cafe.

Wang Family Kitchen — Home-style family buffet under $20 

Put the words ‘Korea’ and ‘buffet’ together and one might think of KBBQ. But for a true Korean experience, head to Wang Family Kitchen at Hillview Community Centre, where you’ll get to indulge in a home-style buffet at only S$18.90/pax.

Run by a Korean family, the menu changes on a daily basis so you’ll always be surprised. Some of the previous mains served are Spicy Garlic Fried Chicken, Beef Bone Soup, and Bulgogi Beef, and they’re served with the usual side dishes such as steamed egg, tteokbokki and even gimbap.
