Those who visit Johor Bahru on the regular may be familiar with coffee chain Oriental Kopi, which often sees snaking queues, with many eager to get their hands on the signature super thick egg tarts.
Malaysia is heaven for the egg tart-obsessed, after all, and here’s an up-and-coming brand you may want to check out before it becomes too popular.
Tapu Tart specialises in Nanyang-style egg tarts, also commonly referred to as “thousand layers egg tart”. All tarts are freshly baked daily with 100% butter and contain no preservatives or additives, so you know you’re getting the real stuff.
There are seven flavours to choose from, but you’ve got to start with the Original Tapu Tart (S$1.37, RM4.80), which boasts smooth egg custard encased within crispy and flaky pastry.
The Cheesy Tart (S$1.56, RM5.50) is another classic, but I can totally see tons of people going crazy for the Yam Tart (S$1.76, RM6.20), which sees the same egg custard layered with smooth taro paste.
You can also find Pandan Kaya (S$1.37, RM4.80), Brown Sugar Mochi (S$1.56, RM5.50), and even Musang King (S$1.97, RM6.90), which is filled with pure MSW pulp — a treat for durian lovers.
The only savoury option is the mildly spicy Curry Potato (S$1.56, RM5.50), which works if you’re looking for a snack that’s not the usual curry puff.
If you want to try (almost) every flavour, you can easily purchase a box of six. I mean, if anyone pulled up to my place with a box of these tarts in hand, I’d be very happy.
Tapu Tart has two outlets in JB, both of which are pretty convenient to get to — one in KSL City Mall, and the other along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee — so there’s no excuse not to swing by for a quick pick-up.
