Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Who would’ve thought we’d be able to experience snow in sunny Singapore. The popular pop-up winter playground, Ice Magic: Winter Wonderland, is back! It’s time to whip out your winter coats, lace up your boots and get ready for some snow sports, throwing snowballs, and of course enjoying the nice cold temperatures.
Taking place from 9 December 2023 to 21 January 2024, at the Bayfront Event area, this year’s edition of Ice Magic promises to be larger and more enchanting than ever. The entire area spans over 3,000 square metres with a host of snow activities. And in case you’re wondering, yes, it is real snow (and super cold).
It’s winter so of course we have to do some winter sports. Hop onto Singapore’s first-ever Merry-Go-Round on ice and embrace the cool winds as you spin around the carousel. In case you’re wondering, no you won’t be sitting on ice blocks. Instead, you’ll be seated on rubber tubes.
Now here’s where things get a little more exciting. Ice Magic will also feature Singapore’s longest snow slope spanning a whopping 98 metres in length and 6.5 metres in height — if you’re looking for something to get your adrenaline pumping, this is it.
If you only have enough courage to go down one slide, you have to go for the snow slope. You’ll be racing down a snowy slope on a rubber tube. And no, We’re not kidding when we say racing. You’ll be sliding down super fast with occasional turns along the way (depending on how you’re seated).
If you’re too scared to do this alone, you can always drag a friend along, and going down with a friend is so much more fun. You’ll go down at a much faster pace plus if you scream, at least you won’t be screaming alone.
You definitely have to try the Double-Lane Couple Ice Slide that will send you racing down a slope filled with twists and sharp bends. There’s two lanes so why not make a race out of it? Winner gets bragging rights (don’t quote me on that)!
Trust me when I say this that you will get hooked on this ride. If you find yourself going down this ice slide multiple times, that’s completely normal because we totally did that (we went down at least five times and still couldn’t get enough of it).
There’s also a five-lane Mini Ice Slide that lets you challenge your whole family or squad of friends. Don’t underestimate the length of this slide, it may be short but it will still send you a rush of adrenaline.
Of course, there are plenty of photo spots spread across the entire area, so make sure you get your cameras and poses ready.
You know what else would be great in this cold? Hot chocolate. Make sure to grab yourself a free cup of hot chocolate that will definitely warm your cold soul. Plus it’s super comforting and chocolatey.
Another way to keep warm is to head out and explore the free-to-enter Winter Food Village, and fill your tummies while you’re at it. The winter food village features over 10 winter-themed kiosks offering dishes from Swiss Rosti to spiced mulled wine, Mala in a Cup, Thai street food, and even shaved ice (if you’re not cold enough from the snow inside) more.
After all that cold in the snow area, some spicy Tteokbokki with Kimari (S$9.90) sounded absolutely superb to me. Top up an additional S$1 for some cheese (which you bet I did). The sweet and spicy tteokbokki really warmed me right up and reminded me of my winter trips to Korea.
I don’t know how many of you remember Chippy’s but boy was I happy to see their booth here. I loved their Sausage and Mash (S$18) and it definitely brought me back to my childhood.
You cannot leave without catching the Enchanted Nights Lights at Ice Magic which takes place at the last hour of each session. The entire ice rink will be transformed into a romantic winter wonderland illuminated by colourful Arctic winter lights. Cue Frozen II’s official soundtrack “Into The Unknown”.
Visitors with their own winter gear can skip the queue, but not to worry, as there’ll be complimentary rentals of winter jackets and snow boots available on a first-come, first-served basis, alongside winter gloves and socks that can be purchased on-site. Still, you’ve got to be dressed warmly and in long pants if you don’t want to freeze your butts off.
If you’re not going anywhere cold this holiday season, treat yourself to a walk in the winter wonderland at Ice Magic! Plus, it is the perfect place for those looking to recreate their Frozen “Let It Go” moment.
