Mars: The Red Mirror lets you explore Mars up close featuring a real life Martian meteorite, historical artefacts, contemporary artworks and more

by June Ngooi

If you have ever gazed up at the night sky and spotted an exceptionally brighter ‘star’ than the others, you might have spotted the red planet of Mars.

Yes, it might seem far away and it’s not like we can hop on a plane to visit, but what if I told you that you could experience Mars on Earth

Spacefarers, our next stop will be none other than the red planet!

Mars: The Red Mirror exhibition is finally here in Singapore at the ArtScience Museum, marking its Asian premiere having been first shown in Barcelona in 2021. From 25 November 2023 to 7 April 2024, the exhibition will take you on a journey through diverse time periods from ancient to present, showcasing the cultural impact of Mars across art, history, science, and society.

With its first touchdown in the Asian region, Mars: The Red Mirror sets its sights on including the pioneering of Asian astronomers as well as diving into Southeast Asian pop culture of how Mars is portrayed.

This is not just a journey through the galactic but also one of academics. This exhibition includes charting scientific discoveries of Mars and its moons, as well as the role of Mars in science fiction and literature.

Now that you have packed your bags for this space trip, what can you expect to see while you’re exploring Mars?

Mars: The Red Mirror features over 300 objects including rare scientific manuscripts, sculptures, historical artefacts, contemporary artworks, and even an authentic Martian meteorite

Think about it, how many times in your life can you say that you have seen a meteorite straight from Mars? Even FedEx can’t compare.

On top of that, bask in the sheer size of Luke Jerram’s “Mars” art installation while you’re there. Standing at four metres in diameter, this large sculpture of Mars features detailed NASA imagery of the Martian surface. This allows for a close view of the red planet’s surface in detail, complete with landmarks, focal mountain points, as well as craters.

Art and science fiction aficionados may rejoice at the triptych by Michael Najjar that visualises the futuristic new spaceport that is currently in its construction phase by SpaceX. Commercial space travel might not just be a vision anymore.

You can also catch a glimpse of the most ancient material to exist on Earth at Mars: The Red Mirror — stardust. Safely contained in Katie Paterson’s hand-blown hourglass, the fossilised remnants of a time before Earth was formed has been crushed into this fine powder and now serves as a symbolism of time.

Are you excited yet?

Tickets are priced at S$20 for adult Singaporean Citizens and S$23 for adult non-citizens. There are also concession tickets on sale for both adult citizens and non-citizens priced at S$16 and S$18 respectively.

For those who want to visit Mars: The Red Mirror as a family, two adults and two children would be S$56 for citizens and S$64 for non-citizens.

If you’re interested in heading down to the exhibition, it would be best to plan ahead and book your tickets via Marina Bay Sands box offices and through SISTIC.

The ever-expanding galaxy beyond our skies is one that we hardly get a glimpse of (save for through telescopes and other space-viewing tools), but the first look at Mars up close starts from now.

So, get ready to mark your calendars for this out of the world experience!
