The ultimate guide to exploring Miaoli for one day, featuring capybara-feeding, Taiwan’s largest indoor theme park and more

by Tai Wing Xin

Known for its natural beauty and rich Hakka culture, Miaoli is a must-visit while in Taiwan

Travelling from Taichung? The Taiwan Railway has a one-hour train ride, with single tickets ranging between S$3 and S$6. Tickets can be booked here. Simply enter your departure and arrival stations, then select from an extensive list of departure timings available.

If you’re not on a budget, the fastest way to travel from Taichung to Miaoli is a 40-minute taxi ride. Prices range between S$50 and S$65.

While attractions like the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum and Nanzhuang Old Street are popular favourites, consider these five attractions for your day trip to Miaoli.

Green Fantasy Forest

If you love taking photos for your Instagram feed, you’ll absolutely love this one.

Travel all around the world at Green Fantasy Forest, where you’ll be able to visit floating churches, Indian camps, and French rattan gardens.

A single ticket for three hours of admission costs S$12.50. Based on reviews, three hours is sufficient time to explore the entire park and snap a few months’ worth of photos.

However, if you have time to spare, a single ticket with no time limit costs S$29.35 instead.

Children 90cm or below enter for free, while children between 90cm and 120cm can enter at half price.

If you’re a fantasy lover like me, look out for Harry Potter’s Magic House and the Hobbit Village of The Lord of the Rings.

Hobbit Valley

Did anyone else practically grow up with The Lord of the Rings trilogy? I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve rewatched it.

A closer and more affordable alternative to the Hobbiton movie set in New Zealand is Hobbit Valley, a small park located on a mountain.

For just S$8.20, a single ticket pays for your entry, with a TWD 100 discount (about S$4.30) for restaurant consumption. There’s also free admission for children aged six and below, the elderly aged 75 and above, and people with disabilities.

Enjoy the magnificent scenery of Miaoli on the highest high-altitude swing in Taiwan.

Flying Cow Ranch

Also known as Feiniu Ranch, Flying Cow Ranch is one of the largest farms in Taiwan. The main attraction, as the name suggests, is the Holstein and Jersey cows on the ranch.

From S$13.70, get a single ticket with varying perks, such as fresh milk ice cream.

While it’s challenging to get here due to its mountainous location and lack of access to public transport, it’s worth it for animal lovers. Get your steps in on the big lawn while admiring the Japanese and American-inspired ranches against the beautiful scenery.

It’s all hands on deck here because you can milk the cows or feed the Barbadian black-bellied sheep, rabbits, and ducks.

The park also sells a variety of dairy products, handmade from fresh milk produced in the ranch itself. Try the Fresh Milk, Fresh Yoghurt, or the Baked Milk Pudding.

Zhuo Ye Cottage

While Zhuo Ye Cottage is primarily a farm homestay, you can also visit for a relaxing day. Fun fact: Every brick and tile was hand-made by the owner over 10 years.

At S$7.75, a single ticket allows you full admission with a deduction of TWD 100 (about S$4.30) from park consumption. Or, get the Vegetarian Meal Set for S$25.85, which includes admission to the park and a full vegetarian meal.

There’s also free admission for children under 115cm and people with disabilities.

Reviews rave about the vegetarian food, so I recommend trying it for yourself to see what the hype is about.

While you’re there, check out the natural indigo dyeing workshops
