Ryo Yakiniku grills up affordable halal yakiniku in Tai Seng coffeeshop

by Christabel Tan

As an intern trying her best to stick to a budget, I don’t get to eat expensive Japanese yakiniku often. Even though the mere thought of A5 Miyazaki wagyu makes my mouth water, my sense of restraint (and wallet) says no.

Thankfully, eateries serving tasty, accessible, and value-for-money yakiniku have popped up all over, and Ryo Yakiniku is no exception. However, it stands out as Singapore’s first Muslim-owned yakiniku joint in a coffeeshop. And in thriving Tai Seng, no less.

Prime beef cuts & more

You won’t break the bank with these beautiful cuts of beef. Go for the Prime Karubi (S$6 for 50g), Gyutan (S$5 for 50g), and Kata Rosu (S$6 for 100g). As for non-beef options, there are only two at Ryo Yakiniku — Lamb Shoulder (S$6 for 100g) and Chicken Thigh (S$5 for 100g).

You’ll have the pleasure of grilling your favourite cuts and have them fresh — completing the true yakiniku experience so well, you’ll soon forget you’re in a coffee shop. Also, dipping yakiniku into onsen eggs is a must. You’re not eating it right if you don’t, and I stubbornly stand by that. Fight me.

There is also finger food like Gyoza (S$8) and Chicken Karaage (S$7), but if I were you, I’d gleefully save my stomach space for more beef. I will, however, encourage you to order the Mushroom Platter (S$6) or Vegetable Platter (S$5) for some much-needed balance.

Deluxe Set for two

If you’re the type that wants to try (almost) everything on the menu, the Deluxe Set (S$40) is perfect for two. Getting to feast on 200g Karubi, 50g Prime Karubi, 50g Gyutan, 200g Sliced Chicken, a Mushroom Platter, Onsen Eggs, and Rice at that price is a pretty darn good deal.

I can’t wait to see more Japanese halal food offerings emerge in the near future. One thing is for sure: Ryo Yakiniku is definitely paving the way for more unique Muslim-owned F&B concepts.

No walk-ins are accepted; you can make reservations and check their availability via Instagram DM.
