11 special proposal ideas in Singapore since COVID-19 got you on lockdown

by Natalie Lim

COVID-19 may have set us some terrible travel restrictions, but there are no boundaries for love. It’s been a year of being stuck in Singapore, so some of us may have postponed overseas proposal plans, since popping the question is an important moment that has to be done properly.

But if you cannot wait any longer, or, if you’re trying to send bb some sort of hint to “just propose lah”, this article is for you. Though bb will not be asking you to be his on the soaring cliffs of Santorini, we’ve scoured some proposal places and ideas that’ll make the moment equally as memorable.

Imagine going to a movie, only to realise that there are fairy lights peppered all over the theatre and a video montage of you and bae on the big screen.

You can’t blame us girls for wanting our boyfriends to be dreamy knights in shining armours, especially when we’ve been fed with a multitude of Disney movies and fairy tales. To truly sweep her off her feet, schedule your proposal at Alkaff Mansion, a hidden castle-like restaurant in Singapore.

With a beautiful courtyard and majestic infrastructure, this proposal idea is sure to make her feel like a princess.

Choose to either have your meal indoors in their colonial restaurant or dine alfresco in the garden-themed area. Whether you’re Beauty or the Beast leaves room for debate, but if the proposal happens here, you’ll at least live to tell a tale as old as time.

Kenyaki Japanese Restaurant — Be transported to Kyoto, Japan

Photo: @panpacificsingapore/instagram

For those who have been to Kyoto, you’d know that this magical place is filled with Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. If you and your anata (darling) have been craving a trip to Japan since 2020, make a trip down to Kenyaki Japanese Restaurant, a Japanese enclave hidden on the fourth floor of the Pan Pacific hotel.

Besides the visible Singapore Flyer in the background, nothing else gives away the fact that you’re still in Singapore. The Garden Pavillion is decked in Japanese bonsais, willow trees and a zen koi pond.

In the evening, the place is lit up with toros (stone lanterns). The romantic ambience sets the mood for a perfect proposal and you’ll perhaps make it on the list for “Top 10 Anime Proposals”.

Do take note that you’ll have to make a reservation for the restaurant to visit the place. But hey, hardly anyone says no to Japanese Cuisine.

Pulau Ubin — Take your relationship to new heights

Photo: instagram/@_garylow

For the adventurous couples that have conquered every single trail and hiking point in Singapore, a trip to Pulau Ubin will set you onto a new trial. Take a day’s vacation and travel to the northeast island of Singapore, where loads of activities await you.

Photo: @hoteljen/instagram

Just a short 15 minutes boat ride away from the main island of Singapore, head to Changi Point Ferry Terminal and board a bumboat headed for the island. The 10sqkm island can be explored on foot or by bicycle, allowing you to spot wild animals such as boards, otters and birds.

But for the best view of the quarries on the island, take a walk up Puaka Hill. Overlooking the Ubin Quarry, it is an unbeaten scenery that’ll take her breath away.

Fotoautomat — Black and white retro photobooth proposal

To forever immortalise the big moment, consider doing your proposal at Fotoautomat, a black and white retro photobooth at The Projector. Usher her into the photobooth, pull the curtains close, and pop the question before the shutter clicks. You’ll be able to catch her overwhelming look of surprise, happiness or tears of…joy.

Each session costs S$4 and produces one film strip. It’s a very adorable idea that requires precise execution and timing, but it’ll definitely be a story to tell if done successfully.
