The feasting and festivities kick off with an exquisite line-up of decadent durian desserts from the hotel’s pastry chefs. Taking the stage are new and unique creations like the D24 Cheesecake (S$68), D24 Dark Chocolate Cremeux (from S$20) and more.

Probably the most intriguing creation taking the stage at Goodwood Park Durian Fiesta 2024 is the D24 Granny Smith Mousse Cake (S$20 per slice). Yes, that’s right, the mousse cake will feature the unique pairing of Granny Smith apples and D24 durian encased within an apple glaze. I’ve never heard of apples and durian being paired together, but boy am I interested to see how this turns out!

It’s been quite some time since we last had the D24 Strudel (from S$22) and for those who have been eagerly waiting for it to make a glorious return — the wait is over! The irresistible durian treat makes a comeback with velvety D24 durian pulp and vanilla sponge sandwiched between delicate layers of golden-brown pastry.

One of my favourite kuehs I loved since young is Kueh Dadar and at Goodwood Park Durian Fiesta 2024, they’re featuring a special D24 Gula Melaka Kueh Dadar (from S$22). It comprises a pillowy-soft crepe sweetened with gula melaka, filled to the seams with luscious durian paste and a fragrant layer of freshly grated coconut cooked with gula melaka and pandan leaves — it already sounds divine.

The icons of the Durian Fiesta – ‘Mao Shan Wang’ Power Puff (S$33) and ‘Mao Shan Wang’ Mousse Cake (from S$90) – will also be making an appearance at this year’s event. However, in true icon fashion, they will only be around for a limited time from 1 May 2023 to 21 July 2024. 

Also making a glorious comeback are some of the crowd favourites like the D24 Mousse Cake (from S$19), D24 Ice Cream Tub (S$26), Black Thorn Mousse Cake (from S$108), Black Thorn Ice Cream Tub (S$49.80) and ‘Mao Shan Wang’ Ice Cream Tub (S$42). I am particularly excited for the D24 Crêpe (from S$19) and D24 Puff (from S$36). 

For those looking forward to the durian buffet, we have excellent news — the exclusive durian buffet finally returns with for a limited time only. Taking place from 5 April to 21 July, only on weekends. The spread will feature the tempting durian delights like D24 Durianytaki, Mini D24 Pengat in Green Tea Cone with Chicken Floss, D24 Sourdough Pizza with Spicy Chorizo & Mozzarella, among others.

You can also expect the decadent D24 Dark Chocolate Crémeux, and D24 Gula Melaka Kueh Dadar alongside signatures such as the must-have D24 Mousse Cake, D24 Puffs, as well as a selection of other non-durian desserts.

Located at Dickson Road, this conservation two-storey villa seamlessly blends old-timey elements with contemporary architecture into a beautiful and chic restaurant. 

A large open courtyard decorated with rickshaws and lush greenery also makes up the alfresco dining and bar of the restaurant. But with the recent hot weather, you might prefer the classy air-conditioned interior flanked by a Chinese ink painting mural of a regal tiger adorned with gold.

The traditional yet modern decor of the restaurant is reflected in the menu, which features reimagined Cantonese cuisine with an emphasis on Singaporeans’ favourite – seafood.

You will absolutely want to try the Fried Mao Shan Wang Durian (S$8) as well. You can never go wrong with deep-fried food – I’m salivating at the thought of it already!

For even more of a durian overload, take on the creamy and indulgent Mao Shan Wang Pudding Topped with Durian Ice Cream (S$8.80).

Don’t worry if durian is not your thing, because there are plenty of other interesting dishes to try! The signature Cream Milk Crab (priced by weight) is a spin-off of the familiar black pepper or chilli crab. However, if the odd combination of cream and crab does not seem appealing, you can fall back on the Angelica Black Pepper Crab (S$10.80 per 100g, min order 1 kg).

The Handmade Artisanal Tofu with Golden Superior Crab Meat (S$38) is also a unique dish which features three layers of silken tofu drizzled generously with flavourful crab meat pumpkin sauce.

6. D101

Another common type of durian, D101 carries a mildly sweet flavour with a nice buttery texture. The flesh is considered orangey compared to other varieties, and is a good option for individuals who don’t favour the typical bitter taste of durians.

7. D13

With deep orange flesh, the D13 bears resemblance to the Red Prawn. In fact, durian seller 99 Old Trees warns that dishonest sellers sometimes try to pass D13 durians off as Red Prawns to get a higher price from customers.

It has a mild and sweet taste, and tends to be less pungent. This makes it easy on the palate (especially for beginners). It has big seeds, which means less flesh, but goes for a relatively low price.

8. D1 (Gang Hai)

D1 durians have a milky taste, and unique small bell-shaped seeds. These durians are more fibrous than most, which gives it quite a chew. It might be an acquired taste, but you should still give it a try – you may end up liking it.

9. XO

Named after the alcohol, XO durians have bitter flesh, and carries an alcoholic aftertaste due to the fermentation inside the shell. This gives it a strong taste which may not be suitable for all durian eaters.

It can be easily recognisable from its pale yellow flesh and a small depressed star-shape at the bottom of its shell.

10. Black Pearl

How To Pick A Good Durian

Everybody definitely wants the most bang for their buck, and it would be disappointing if the particular durian you end up with is unsatisfactory. There are two main things to look out for when choosing your durian – ripeness and freshness. We’ve compiled some tips to help you pick the best durian, for optimum flavour and texture.

Scratch The Durian Stem

Using your fingertips to gently scratch the stem of the durian, watch closely to see what happens. If it reveals a fleshy and leafy-green interior, the durian is fresh, likely less than 24 hours off the tree.

If the stem is dark, it means that the durian is likely days old. The same goes for durians that are missing their stems – they are probably of low quality, likely having their stems cut off by the sellers in an attempt to pass them off to unsuspecting buyers.

Additionally, a thicker stalk is an indicator that the fruit has received a lot of nutrients from its tree. This means the flesh is likely to be plumper and of better quality.

Smell The Durian

Sniff along the lines of the durian, where the spikes run parallel to each other. Ideally, smell the top portion of the fruit instead of the bottom, as the husk is thinner at the top and the smell can permeate better.

If there is hardly any smell, the durian is unripe. Besides that, you should also pay attention to the specific scent emitted. If the smell is overpoweringly strong, it’s likely overripe.

It’ll take a bit of experience to nail the exact scent to expect, but you’re mostly looking for an aroma that strikes a good balance between faint and strong.

Pay Attention To Shape

Contrary to popular belief, a perfectly round durian is not necessarily the cream of the crop. Despite their ideal shape, they tend to taste more bland. Instead, look out for irregularly-shaped durians, especially oblong ones, as the flesh tends to be more aromatic and creamy.

Durians that have bulging sides have fleshy seeds, while concave sides are usually an indicator of hollow chambers.

Shake & Listen

Although the sellers are usually the ones handling the fruits, be sure to listen up when they shake or tap the durians. If you can hear the flesh moving inside the shell, ideally with a clear yet slightly squishy sound, it’s perfectly ripe. Unripe fruits may let out a hard and hollow sound, or no noise at all. The latter also applies to overripe durians.

If you manage to get your hands on a durian, shaking it should let you feel a small movement if it is nicely ripe.

Check The Colour

It’s not uncommon to see customers getting durian sellers to cut open the fruits for inspection before they purchase it. Taking a look at the colour of flesh is another important step in finding the ideal durian.
