This underrated halal stall hidden away in a polytechnic serves over unique 50 flavours of appam like mao shan wang durian, mango sticky rice, nasi lemak & more at affordable prices

I’ve had my fair share of Indian cuisine in my life but there was one dish that I’ve yet to try — appam. This stall in Woodlands serves over 50 flavours of appam, a traditional pancake with roots in South Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine, at affordable prices. The best part is, they’re halal-certified too!

Appam Aunty is tucked away in Republic Polytechnic’s North food court and has an extensive selection of sweet and savoury flavoured appam, which boasts a soft and pillowy centre with crisp edges. Some unique offerings on the menu include Mango Sticky Rice (S$4.50), Avocado & Gula Melaka (S$4.50), Nasi Lemak (S$4.50), and even Power Berries (S$4)

The soft and crispy Salted Egg Chicken appam (S$6) had a nice and juicy McSpicy-esque chicken patty on top. It came served with a side of salted egg dip which consisted of mashed salted egg yolk — I would have preferred it to be slightly creamier.

I personally preferred the Satay Goreng Chicken appam (S$5) which had all the elements of a satay including the side of cucumber and onions  — minus the ketupat of course. The chicken satay was well seasoned, while the peanut sauce had a good balance of peanuts and spice without being overly sweet or spicy. This appam is best enjoyed with a little bit of everything in one bite.

As appam are made using fermented flour, you might find that there’s just a slight hint of sourness — especially in the sweet options. That being said, the Ondeh Ondeh appam (S$4.50) had a generous serving of grated coconut and a hint of pandan which helped to mask the taste of the fermented flour. Though, I wish that there was a tad bit more gula melaka drizzled on top to give it the burst of sweetness you get from eating ondeh ondeh

The durian lover in me just had to order the MSW Durian appam (S$4.50) which came with a generous dollop of durian puree made from actual durian flesh. If you love durian as much as I do, you definitely cannot miss out on this one.

Pair your appam with some traditional drinks like Masala Chai (S$3), Cardamom Chai (S$3), or Indian Filter Coffee (S$3) for a nice and soothing finish to your meal. Appam Aunty is open to the public, but we highly recommend visiting during off-peak hours in the evening or on weekends.
