If you’re looking to start the new year by getting in touch with your artsy side and immersing yourself in Singapore’s blooming art and culture scene, you can’t miss Aliwal Urban Art Festival 2023, which transforms the Aliwal Arts Centre into a hipster festival. Look forward to experience the thrill of creating your own graffiti, rocking out at a street party, watching unique dance performances, and so much more.
The one-day festival will be held on 14 January 2023, one day before Singapore Art Week ends, with a wide variety of activities. If you’ve always wanted to pick up a new craft, the Black Market is the perfect place to start. Learn graffiti techniques, figure out how to fix a bike, join an art tour of Kampong Glam, and do other fun activities (all you have to do is register onsite!)
Want to delve deeper into dance? The OPEN STUDIOS programme invites you to experience classical and contemporary dance, where you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at performances you know and love. Complementing the programme are a series of engaging workshops like an improv taster session (S$20) where you get to try your hand at improv/comedy, and making a collaborative collage out of vinyl stickers — a great way to channel your inner artist (or drama queen).
Watch artists challenge themselves in FLIPSIDE, where they’ll have to fit two paintings on a single canvas, and you’ll get to admire the finished piece, which you’ll have to move around the space to see all of it. Don’t forget to also catch prominent graffiti artists creating unique installations across the building.
Before the big finale, hang out at Urban Sounds from 5 to 9pm, and groove to tunes by independent bands and artists of various music genres. Catch performances by indie/Math rock band About Woes, pop and R&B group the Astronauts ft Lukpeach, and Reality Club, an indie band from Jakarta.
End the night with a bang at the RE:union Party; a vibrant street festival with dance battles, adrenaline-pumping performances, and sick beats to keep the party going. It’s that time of night when you can let your hair down, soak in the festive atmosphere, and dance the night away!
