Passion is Volcanic: Desire in Southeast Asian Art

The National Gallery Singapore is pushing the boundaries of artistic expression in Asia with its first-ever R18 exhibition. The provocative exhibition aims to challenge the way we view subjects like desire and intimacy—reframing them as lived experiences rather than a taboo.

It brings together over 70 works from across periods, regions, and cultures, featuring a diverse media of paintings, sculptures, and photography.

Tickets are priced at S$5 for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, and S$8 for other nationalities. The age requirement is 18 and above, and valid identification is required for entry. Filmhouse

Singapore has seen a wave of closures in the art scene, such as The Projector and Filmgarde Cineplexes. Although independent art spaces are increasingly succumbing to corporate developments, Filmhouse’s opening is a second chance for us to support these platforms.

Photo: @Filmhousesg/Facebook

This weekend, catch movies ranging from the latest releases like The Drama to beloved classics like Princess Mononoke by legendary director Hayao Miyazaki—or support local works like Amoeba, an award-winning film by director Tan Siyou, who follows four rebellious girls as they form a secret gang.

As part of its two-month-long housewarming party, the cinema has also launched a Music in Film series, featuring the iconic La La Land alongside Whiplash and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. Weekend standard ticket prices are S$16.50 while concession prices are S$14.50. Whether you’re there for the films, the music, or the community, it’s a great way to support the local arts scene while also having a blast.
