Where are all my Sengkang friends at?

It’s truly a good time to be living in (or around) Sengkang because the neighbourhood has just welcomed a new resident — Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre. That’s right, the neighbourhood also recently welcomed a new shopping mall too — Anchorvale Village.

Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre is located at level 2 of Anchorvale Village, near Farmway LRT station, and will feature a total of 36 F&B stalls with an eclectic mix of vendors ranging from heritage hawkers to local favourites and more.

Joining the hood is Original Simon Road Hokkien Mee who’ll be serving plates of their signature wet and dry version of hokkien mee, both of which boasts a strong wok hei aroma. Not a fan of hokkien mee? No problem! They also have carrot cake too!

What’s a kopitiam without the quintessential chicken rice? Cue Uncle Louis Famous Chicken Rice! When in doubt about what to eat I always gravitate towards a good ol’ plate of chicken rice. For something a little meatier, Tai Hao Chi has Hong Kong style roast meat like Crystal Char Siew and Sio Bak that can do no wrong. The latter even has an oh so satisfying crackling that is just chef’s kiss.

Lately, there have been more hawker centres introducing hakka dishes like lei cha into the mix of food options. And Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre is one such place that is bringing back the traditional hakka flavours.

Lei Cha isn’t a dish that I would voluntarily or naturally gravitate towards but I have to say, I might give the lei Cha at Hakka Leipopo a second go. It is packed with a ton of ingredients like rice, veggies and peanuts which gives it a nice crunchy texture. The mint fragrance is a little on the stronger side but it does add a nice clean finish to the meal. Definitely would order it again.

Spice lovers, we didn’t forget about you! Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre will also be home to San Yi Xuan Mala Hot Pot Grilled Fish for you to enjoy a spicy bowl of Mala or Grilled Fish. We reckon this stall will see snaking queues, especially on a rainy day.

Non-spice lovers, don’t worry, you can treat yourself to a comforting bowl of Yong Tau Foo from Lin Ji Niang Dou Fu.

Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre also has an interesting mix of snack stalls like Thai Khanom Banana — best known for their Thai fried banana frittersMunchi Pancakes, and Ah Tan Wings, best known for their prawn paste chicken wings. Damn, now I spoiled for choice, which one do I visit first?

Over on the Halal food section, you can expect an equally exciting range of food options here like nasi lemak from 97 Nasi Lemak, Indian Rojak from Habib’s Rojak, or some hearty kambing soup from Al Ihshan Combo House & Mutton Soup.

Kawan Bowl, AKA the sister brand of Dan Lao, best known for their omelette rice topped with Ayam Berempah, Sambal Prawns and Taiwang Chicken Cutlet will also be setting up shop here — what an exciting treat!

My personal favourite is the Ayam Berempah Egg Rice (S$6.90). The bowl comes with a whole chicken leg that is seasoned with various spices and fried to a crisp. You’ll get to choose which type of egg you wanna pair with your rice but I strongly recommend getting the silky egg.

Other halal food options available here also include Soldier Chicken, serving halal Western fare. The three-piece Solider Chicken Combo (S$7.90) is super value for money as it comes with three large pieces of fried chicken alongside fries, and house-made slaw.

Other stalls here include Bao Tang Zhi Dao with comforting Chinese soups, Hainan Beef Noodle and Claypot, Jin Kimchi, Soi 18 with their signature wanton mee, and so much more! Sengkang residents, y’all really are in for a treat.

Every weekend, I love to treat myself to a nice plate of economic bee hoon paired with a crispy fried chicken wing, fried egg and lots of chilli. Rumour has it that Eng Kee Chicken Wings makes some of the best fried chicken wings. And having tried it myself, I totally conquer.

The chicken is juicy and tender on the inside and super crispy on the outside. It is worth mentioning that the stall sees snaking queues on the daily, so if I were you, I’d go for the two wings beehoon set with an egg (S$5.30) to make up for all that queuing.

No visit to a hawker centre is complete without some bak chor mee and might I say, Cuo Cuo You Yu certainly delivered with their Dry Signature Bak Chor Mee (S$6).

The noodles is springy and chewy while the sauce is a good mix of vinegar and chilli which makes it slightly tangy and spicy. Spice lovers will definitely enjoy the spicy chilli. The dish is topped with fried shallots for an extra fragrance.

The soup is very robust and filled with a ton of ingredients like liver, lean meat, and meatballs. The meats are all well season, and very tender. I’ll definitely be back for more whenever I’m in the area for lunch.
