This dimsum hawker stall, Bao Hao, has sweet, savoury buns and an extensive selection of dim sum, from S$1.20 at Jurong West

It’s so bright at Bao Hao that I have to dim-sum lights.

This bao master, with 57 years of experience, serves up sweet, savoury buns and a wide variety of dim sum at this hawker stall at Jurong West.

Sweet Steamed Buns

What’s a dim sum house without the classic red bean paste bun? At Bao Hao, each Red Bean Bao costs S$1.20, the same price for the Coffee Bao and Pandan Bao.

I vaguely recall having a Coffee Bao once in my life, but it has never been something I typically enjoy. Bao Hao’s filling-to-dough ratio has me thinking twice, though. Perhaps I will add it to my list of must-try items when I head down.

Their newest addition to the extensive menu of sweet-tasting baos is the Yuan Yang Bao, a double-filling bun, consisting of lotus and red bean paste. I’m curious to taste how two classic bun flavours will turn out when merged.

Salted Steamed Buns

Aside from their sweet buns, Bao Hao also has savoury buns, like its Braised Pork Bao, Char Siew Bao (S$1.30), Chicken Bao (S$2.40), and Big Bao (S$2.40).

The Big Pau, with juicy, and packed pork filling, is one of Bao Hao’s signature buns. I grew up eating these huge buns for its slightly alkaline-yet-salty pork taste, which harmonises perfectly with the subtle sweetness of the bun.

It’s been a long time since I had a taste of this nostalgic bun, also because the taste of nostalgia is just so hard to find these days, with the onslaught of central kitchens and factories.

A traditional braised pork bun features a fluffy, folded steamed bun, filled with braised pork belly, and is typically slightly larger than the size of a palm.

At Bao Hao, the braised pork bao is tenderly crafted, with a golden ratio of meat to fat, and into perfectly guilt-free bite-sized pieces. Now I don’t have to feel guilty for wanting more than one of these buns.

Just as I have never resisted a luscious braised pork bao in my life, I surely wouldn’t miss this.

Dim Sum

As an avid fan of Cantonese delights, I can’t miss the dim sum offerings at Bao Hao. The best thing? They’re all handmade!

These luscious egg tarts have caught my stomach before my brain even made out the layers of crusts and slightly-charred custard. Just thinking about how caramelised and crispy this egg tart could be, gets me every time I glance at it.

This handmade Siew Mai, S$2.80, for three pieces, is filled with juicy tender pork, and is wrapped in a delicate, thin dumpling skin. Gobble the entire basket without having to worry if you’ve had a bit too much.

There are still lots of items on their menu which I have yet to uncover. Looks like this will be my breakfast spot this weekend, will I see you there?
