What is the Lyrid Meteor Shower?

The Lyrid meteor shower is an annual celestial event that takes place as Earth passes through a trail of debris left by the Comet Thatcher. It’s known to have radiant meteors and to leave occasional bright flashes called a fireball. 

How to get the best views of the Meteor Shower

For optimal viewing in Singapore, the showers are said to peak on 22 April 2026 and 23 April 2026 after 11pm. For the best chance of spotting them, stay away from city lights and other forms of light pollution, and find a dark area with a clear view of the sky. Just in case you aren’t sure, we’ve compiled a few places to watch the meteor shower.

Changi Beach Park

Located near the edge of Singapore, Changi Beach is largely unaffected by the city lights and is a prime area for stargazing. The spacious beach and empty fields make a comfortable spot to settle for the night. Along with the cool seaside breeze, it’s one of our top spots for the best viewing experience.

East Coast Park 

East Coast Park is another area commonly frequented by casual stargazers. Its more accessible location makes it a popular choice; however, there is slightly more light pollution with the LED lamps placed along every road. If you do choose to stargaze there, we recommend finding a darker and more secluded area, such as the beach, for a better chance of spotting the meteor shower.

Labrador Nature Reserve

Labrador Nature Reserve offers lovely panoramic views of the sea and gets very dark at night, making it a suitable place to stargaze. However, it doesn’t have expansive fields and beaches like Changi Beach or East Coast Park. Rather, you may have to settle on a bench along its trail or boardwalk, or on the concrete floor of the Berlayer Shade. Whatever it is, the beautiful, tranquil views and clear view of the night sky will definitely make it worth the trouble.

Punggol 

Punggol has been a prime area for stargazing due to its low light pollution, and it even has its own astronomy club! Recommended viewing spots there include the Lorong Haulus Wetland, Sunrise Bridge in Punggol Waterway Park, and the Punggol Point Observation Deck in Punggol Point Park.

Upper Seletar Reservoir

One of the more scenic spots to go stargazing, Upper Seletar Reservoir offers a breathtaking view from a field near its lookout tower. The serene spot is located near the water’s edge, so you can gaze out into an expansive open space and sky. It’s the perfect place for some quiet contemplation while you try to catch the meteor showers.

Yishun Dam 

The Yishun Dam is a secluded, hidden gem in the north that sports beautiful waterfront views and an uninterrupted vista of the skies. Situated near Rower’s Bay Park, it may not be the most accessible by public transport, but that just means you probably won’t have to share the space with throngs of fellow stargazers.

Located along East Coast Road, right beside the iconic 328 Katong Laksa, this retro and vibey yakiniku spot might look unassuming from the outside, and we won’t blame you if you missed it on your first visit. The moment you enter the store, though, it’s as if you’ve been transported to Japan. The restaurant features at least two to three rows of tables that cater to larger groups, but if you’re visiting by yourself, you can claim the coveted counter seats. 

Nothing screams a proper yakiniku experience more than sitting at the counter, especially when you’re seated up close and personal with the chefs. To make solo dining even more comfortable, the restaurant has thoughtfully installed retractable exhaust hoods at individual seating areas. 

Once you’ve settled down into your preferred spot, don’t rush through the menu—there are over 30 meat cuts and parts to choose from, ranging from tongue, offal, cartilage, and more. 

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options, ordering either the Mokurin Speciality or the Mokurin Moriawase is a safe bet. The Mokurin Speciality includes Beef Dashimaki Tamago (S$12), Beef Tongue with Leek (S$26), and Mokurin Soup Chicken Rice (S$17.50). Meanwhile, the Mokurin Moriawase includes Mokurin Assorted BBQ 300g Beef and Chicken (S$50) and Premium Wagyu Assorted BBQ 300g (S$115). 

Prefer a more wallet-friendly option? You can order your favourites à la carte, such as the Pork Belly Samgyeopsal Set (S$18.50) and Garlic Hanami (S$18.50). For our adventurous foodies, try the rare cuts that are uncommonly found in Singapore, like Simacho (S$15.80), referring to beef large intestines, or Beef Cheek Meat (S$13.80).

Beyond meats, there are various sides you can opt for—our favourite is the Assorted Kimchi (S$12.50). There are also mushrooms and vegetables you can order to grill and pair alongside your meats. 

We love our yakiniku with carbs, and the restaurant delivers with four different rice sizes—from small to double extra large, priced between S$4 and S$7. Not a big fan of rice? Don’t worry, as the restaurant also has noodles and soup options, perfect for cleansing your palate between grilled meats. 

End the night with a drink of your choice! Alongside regular soft drinks like Secret Lemonade Soda (S$6) and Coca-Cola (S$5), the restaurant offers a solid selection of alcoholic beverages. From Premium Japanese Sake to Sapporo Draft Beer (S$10), the options are plenty. Just imagining a solo night of grilled meats paired with a nice cold pint of beer is a dream come true for introverts. 

Savour some me-time at this cosy eatery and recharge after a long, tiring day. It’s a bonus for our Easties, thanks to its convenient location—and for our Westies, trust us when we said it’s worth the journey for some good ol’ premium grilled meats and drinks.

Many Mexican restaurants and hotspots are easily accessible. For Rodeo Table, they’ve cosied up in the basement of the Mint Museum of Toys. If you’re unfamiliar with the location, not to worry, as the Mint Museum is conveniently located between City Hall Station and Bugis Station. 

What makes Rodeo Table ahead of its time is being the sole food and beverage (F&B) outlet in the building. To get to the restaurant, all you have to do is descend a flight of stairs by the entrance, and you’ll find yourself in the hidden bistro. The space is lit with warm yellow lighting and adorned with vintage posters to strike a sense of nostalgia. 

Unless you’re there for pre-drinks or an intimate experience, opt for the bar seating. In our case, we dove right in and ordered whatever looked good.

Starting with the Frozen Margaritas (S$18), there are three flavours to choose from—Lime, Strawberry, and Mango. We tried Lime and Strawberry, both of which were refreshing and definitely eased our exhaustion from the long week. Surprisingly smooth and sweet, the margaritas left us craving more. Our only regret was not opting for the pitcher, priced at just S$55.80 (in girl math, that’s easily three to four margaritas). 

We tried the recommended appetisers, which were the Baby Buffalo Chicken Wings (S$12.80 for 10 pieces) and the Elotes (S$13.80). The Baby Buffalo Chicken Wings had the server shaking the wings in a tub with the flavour of your choice. Since we love spicing things up, we went with the spiciest option—regretting slightly as our lips felt numb after the first bite. 

Luckily, we had the Elotes (Mexican Sweet Corn), which brought our palates from numbingly spicy to sinful goodness. Made with sweet corn, mayonnaise, bacon, lime, and parmesan cheese, it had a nice balance of sweet and savoury, with a tinge of juiciness from the corn. 

Once we were done with the starters, we dug into our mains—Tokyo Jambalaya (S$23) and Chicken Tinga Chef’s Tacos (S$4.80 per piece). Across all the mains we tried, the Tokyo Jambalaya definitely took the spotlight for its unique twist. 

At first, we were intrigued by the name—after all, Rodeo Table is a Texan-Mexican (Tex-Mex) cuisine restaurant, but Tokyo Jambalaya hinted at some Japanese influences. When the dish was served, we found that it was made with teppanyaki rice, fresh salsa, jambalaya sauce, jalapenõs, and turmeric spices. A part of us was worried that the spices would overpower the Tex-Mex flavours, but we were thankfully proven wrong. 

The dish turned out to be unexpectedly satisfying—perfect for you if you’re craving something hearty after having one too many drinks at Rodeo Table.

A highly underrated shop, Film Vibes offers the majority of their digicams for under S$200. These well-conditioned cameras range from renowned brands like Olympus, and include the Sony Cyber-shot range, as well as smaller brands like RICOH. 

On several occasions, they have also launched Budget Collections, where selected cameras were priced below S$150, going as low as S$89. However, depending on the model you are looking for, they also offer semi-pro cameras priced up to S$700. Regardless, if you’re just a first-timer looking for a beginner’s camera, having a budget of S$120–S$190 is more than enough to get you a good one.

Digicam Diaries

One of the more popular digicam stores in Singapore, Digicam Diaries lies among the many chic shops in Haji Lane. 

Inside the shop, a whole shelf of digicams from different brands, prices and production years await you to take home. Designs in the shop include the Sony Cyber-shot, Panasonic Lumix, and more. In fact, they hold over 200 digicams for you to try out and choose from! 

A majority of their cameras range from S$170–S$220. The prices here are a little steeper than others, but considering their trusted reputation and the curated collections they provide, it can be seen as a fair trade.

Digicams can also be found online through their website, but only a curated selection of cameras are available there. Thus, it is highly recommended to visit their physical store instead.

Digicam Depository 

The largest retailer of second hand digicams in Singapore, the Digicam Depository has the best balance between quality and pricing in my opinion. From chunky classics to sleek minis, they have the largest variety of retro digital cameras from the late 90s to mid 2000s.

Also located in Haji Lane, the physical store displays over 10 digicam models and 700 cameras for you to choose from. Apart from their digicams, you can also browse through camcorders, camera accessories, and even card readers for SD cards no longer in production. 

Similar to Digicam Diaries, Digicam Depository also prices most of their cameras from S$170 onwards.

If travelling down to Haji Lane might feel like a hassle, their website provides an ample amount of cameras for you to browse through before you decide to head down.

Thrifted Clicks

Unlike the previous vendors which have either a physical shop or are permanently remote, Thrifted Clicks makes an exception by making its rounds in Singapore—boothing at multiple public markets. 

By following their Telegram channel or social media, you can be updated on their latest booth location and collection there. Based on what I have seen from them, they are usually based in Orchard road—in either Orchard Central or outdoor atriums outside Somerset. 

Their prices range widely, from S$48–S$220, so prices can be unpredictable unless they have presented it previously. Still, I would recommend a budget of at least S$160 just to have an adequate variety of cameras to choose from.

Retrolens

Ending our list of top picks is Retrolens, located inside Standard Photo Studio along Macpherson Road. 

Personally, this store is the best to shop from if you are looking for digicams that emulate Kodak film or Fujifilm-style pictures. Despite being a digital camera store, I like how their cameras give me the most distinct photographic effects and outcomes. 

Considering the cameras’ capabilities, their cameras are priced around S$170–S$250, so this might not be the top choice for those on a budget.

We get it—high tea is not for everyone. However, there’s no harm in giving it a try, especially with this newly opened Halal-certified high tea bistro that definitely will not break your bank. 

Conveniently located in the heart of the CBD, right at the Duo Galleria, is Pomegranate. Unlike typical high tea spots, which you may find in hotels or semi-alfresco setups, Pomegranate sits among a sea of office workers wearing worn-out faces. 

While the exterior may seem unassuming, the interior holds a tropical, classy yet comfortable aura that welcomes customers with open arms. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a display of their pastries and bakes, like the Yuzu Tart (S$8) and Carrot Cake (S$8.50), that will tempt you for a bite. 

Not tempted yet? Take a seat and browse through their extensive menu. They offer affordable classic English-style afternoon tea sets, along with à la carte items from their Breakfast menu like Eggs Royale (S$18), Chicken Katsu Sandwich (S$15), Pastrami Sandwiches (S$15) and more. 

For the full high tea experience, go for their Afternoon Tea set, priced at S$70 for two people. The set includes finger sandwiches, Yuzu Tarts, Paris-Brest, scones, and tea of your choice. It’ll be available every day from 2pm onwards. With girl math, that’s practically less than S$40 per person! 

The bistro will swing in full force every day, from 9am to 6pm, on Monday to Thursday. Interested in dropping by after work? Head down on Friday, as the bistro is open until 8pm. If you’d like an early start on Sunday mornings, then you can head down from 8am to 5pm. 

Pomegranate makes a great entryway into trying high tea, and who knows, you may end up enjoying it.

As I’m unable to travel this year, I decided to take the initiative to hunt down authentic Japanese food to ease my cravings instead. To my pleasant surprise, I stumbled upon a cosy izakaya in Orchard Plaza serving authentic onigiri, hotpots, and alcohol from Oita, Kyushu. 

Located in the heart of Orchard, MOMOYA serves authentic izakaya dishes, an Omakase course, and Japanese Sake.

I was particularly intrigued by their onigiri as I had never seen such large ones and such uncommon toppings. These special onigiris are priced at S$12, and come in flavours like Ume, Raw Mentaiko, Spicy Vegetables, and Salmon.

In addition to the oversized onigiri, you’ll also receive a complimentary small bowl of miso soup to help wash down these plump rice balls. Another highlight is that they’re made with Takuron rice, sourced from Aomori Prefecture in Japan.

Apart from their onigiris, another filling option of theirs is their Momoya Pots (S$28), served with Miso or Shouyu broth, or their popular Duck Pot (S$28), full of fragrant onions and large duck slices.

Out of the hearty menu items offered, they also serve unique dishes like Octopus Vinegar Miso, which gives you a good balance between the salty sea and sweet condiments. 

While the price points may seem steep, you are paying for authentic, high-quality, and handmade cuisine, so I find it to be a fair trade. 

Personally, I recommend coming during their Omakase hours from 6pm to 8pm. Their Omakase menu includes four appetisers (S$8–S$12), Marinated Sashimi (S$24), Chicken Tempura (S$18), and a Momoya Special Rice Ball (S$10) or Oita Raw Egg Rice (S$8) for a total of S$50. 

When adding up the original prices of the items, the total amounts to a little more than S$100. That’s saving you around S$50 when you dine during these happy hours.

As it is an izakaya, the atmosphere is a lot more casual compared to other Omakase serving restaurants. Regardless, what I find best about this is how you can enjoy exquisite delicacies in a comfortable environment, which is not what most of us wish for in well-established restaurants. 

Contrary to its humble outlet size, this izakaya is an extremely popular spot, so do make a reservation before heading over. I doubt it will be possible to accommodate even a single walk-in.

MOMOYA is a spot I would definitely treat myself to, and judging from the reviews of past customers, I’m confident they would say the same. The next time you visit Orchard, don’t skip the older buildings; there might be a hidden gem waiting just for you.

After a month-long refresh, this major rebrand is TBB’s first since its launch in 2012.

Following the revamp, TBB has also rolled out new bakes. Take this as a mini guide to some of their new offerings.

Singapore’s first Kouign Amann Soft-Serve

Whether you’re a regular at TBB, or have never had it before, you must have heard of their most popular bake — the Kouign Amann. 

TBB has turned indulgence up a notch again this time round with its all-new Kouign Amann Soft-Serve (S$5.50). At thirty cents less than the classic Kouign Amann (S$5.80), this crisp cameralised pastry atop velvety soft-serve offers a luxurious and best-of-both-worlds treat. 

Savoury items

Of all the times I have had TBB, I have been ordering the Ham & Cheese Croissant (S$9.50), but with their five new savoury items on the menu, I don’t think I’ll be having my regular croissant for the time being. 

Can’t get enough of the Shio Pan craze? The Prosciutto Crudo Shio Pan (S$9) is a savoury, fresh, and delicately sweet item with Parma ham, baby romaine lettuce and watercress, layered in a parmesan Shio Pan, drizzled with honey mustard mayo sauce.

If you’re visiting their flagship store, I’d recommend you get their Eng Hoon Street exclusives, like the Tuna Salad Sandwich (S$9.50), and the Chicken Caesar Salad Sandwich (S$12).

There are many more new items like the Chicken Meatball Marinara Danish (S$8), Shabu beef & Kimchi Lattice (S$8), so head down to try them yourself!

Sweet items

Since we have already established that TBB’s newest Kouign Amann Soft-Serve is a must-try, let’s talk more about their newest Eng Hoon Street viennoserie.

Matcha lovers, you’re in for a treat for the Black Sesame & Matcha Danish (S$7.50) — a flaky pastry filled with matcha pastry cream and silky white chocolate. It is finished with black sesame paste and a touch of fleur de sel (hand-harvested sea salt with large crystals) for the perfect balance. 

If you’re into cute things, definitely get the Raspberry & Vanilla Cream Ribbon (S$7) — a soft ribbon-shaped pastry filled with a rich vanilla cream and raspberry jam. It is a light and fruity pastry, dusted with icing sugar.

The Mango Sticky Rice Danish (S$7.50) is a buttery pastry inspired by the classic Thai delicacy, layered with glutinous rice, coconut cream, and fresh mango. Drizzle the coconut cream to your desired amount with the little pipette provided on the pastry.

Beverages

What’s a nice chill cafe session without a nice cup of drink? TBB has an evolved beverage menu featuring Dark Cherry Matcha (S$8.50), an earthy matcha with dark cherry, harmoniously blended with milk for a softly sweet, and slightly tart finish.

I’m not a fan of cherries, so I’m looking forward to trying the Pistachio Matcha (S$8.50), and the Banana Caramel Latte (S$8.50). 

The Pistachio Matcha is a rich mix of matcha and nutty pistachio, topped with whipped cream, and a touch of salted honey butter for that sweet and savoury finish.

Meanwhile, the Banana Caramel Latte is a bold shot of espresso with banana caramel, milk, and a touch of salted honey butter. The cherry-on-top for this drink is the whipped cream and crushed peanuts for a sweet and nutty finish.

I can’t wait to head down to have a taste of TBB’s newest offerings, will you be heading there too?

This multimedia showcase is the museum’s ode to Singapore for SG60, blending light, art, and storytelling for an interactive and engaging experience. 

From the moment you step into the exhibition, you’re transported into an imaginative re-creation of Singapore’s past. The space is bathed in vivid projections and ambient soundscapes inspired by the sights, sounds, and textures of bygone eras. 

A highlight of the experience is the use of an RFID-enabled wristband, given to each visitor at the start. This digital “compass” guides you along the exhibition path. 

Beyond static displays, Singapore Odyssea thrives on movement and transformation. 

Stand still, and you’ll see the scenery around you subtly shift, as though time itself is passing. Move forward, and history advances with you, revealing the next chapter in the story, encountering everything from the legendary creatures and beings from our local myths to our ever-changing seascape. 

The experience is as much about emotional connection as it is about education. While you marvel at the sea’s role in shaping our country’s past, the showcase draws you in with its attention to detail and layered narratives. 

Younger visitors will enjoy the gamified aspects of the wristband, while history buffs will appreciate the nuanced presentation of familiar events. 

By the end of your journey, Singapore Odyssea leaves you with a deeper appreciation of how far this small but mighty nation has come. It’s a fitting tribute for SG60 — a reminder that our shared story is still being written and that the odyssey of Singapore is far from over.

Admission is free for Singaporeans, Permanent Residents, and children aged 6 years and below. 

Although, do note that the exhibition will be closed on 15 August 2025. Admission is also by timed entry, so you’ll still need to get tickets here even if the admission is free for you! You’ve been warned.
