Find the largest chirashi dons at Chirashizushi Shou, hidden in Thompson Plaza

by Alexis Lee

In a season of new restaurant openings and launches, hidden gems are still very much around, with Chirashizushi Shou being one of our best finds.

Located on the second floor of Thompson Plaza, this cosy restaurant offers a large variety of sushi bowls and maki rolls. Known for their large portions and generous chunks of sashimi, here’s what makes this place a real gem.

Headlining Chirashizushi Shou’s menu is its Sumo Truffle Chirashi Don (S$25.90), comprising large chunks of sashimi cubes—including salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and red snapper alongside flying fish roe and diced tamago. When served, this item in particular makes an entrance with a mountain of sashimi atop fluffy sushi rice, living up to its Sumo title. Drizzled with Truffle Oil, each bite is accompanied by a luxurious aroma. This addition, however, can make the meal heavier than other dishes, so we would recommend this to our large eaters.

Following the line of mixed sashimi, the Irodori Chirashi Don (S$19.90) came with similar sashimi ingredients, and a topping of uni. As this dish doesn’t contain any truffle drizzle, we found it easier to digest and go back for more. As the sashimi’s fresh flavour and firmness was eaten together with soft sushi rice, this combination was what we found the best—as classic as it might be. To go one step further, we can confidently say that we found this bowl to be the most well-rounded in terms of flavour, variety, and price point!

Lastly, we found a bowl to order for our salmon sashimi fanatics. Consisting of three kinds of salmon—aburi salmon, salmon sashimi, and salmon belly—the Tokusen Salmon Don (S$22.90) brings about different flavours despite using the same ingredient. Topped off with bright flying fish roe and a slice of tamago, this item is dedicated to showcasing the different flavours of salmon.

While the portion might not look huge at first, don’t let its appearance deceive you. If we were to give a sushi to rice ratio, it wouldn’t be a stretch to describe it as 5:5. As other eateries usually cover the top of their rice with cubes sparsely, chirashizushi doesn’t hold back!

Beyond the bowls, the restaurant also serves thick-cut sashimi and long rolls of sushi maki, but we were simply too full from the dons alone. If you do plan to order these delicacies however, we would recommend doing so in a large gathering.

After eating, be sure to walk your rounds around the mall, because you’ll be stuffed. While it is fun to be trying new trades in Singapore, nothing beats a comforting meal in the familiar malls of our childhood—and Chirashizushi Shou has made a testament to that.
