This hidden Korean-run dessert cafe sells bingsu and street snacks like tteokbokki, hotteok & gimbap

Bingsu (Korean shaved ice) may have seen better days, but we can’t deny that it’s hard to go wrong with the refreshing, crowd-pleasing treat.

Although nothing beats enjoying the real deal in South Korea (any Sulbing fans here?), Gangnam Cafe is an under-the-radar Korean-run dessert cafe worth checking out the next time you find yourself near King Albert Park.

The bright, spacious, and fairly authentic dessert cafe is tucked away in Link@896 (the former Sime Darby Centre), joining the likes of neighbouring Korean joints Bab Muk Ja Korean Restaurant and KONG Cafe.

Pick and choose from an array of bingsu with fun toppings and flavours like Mango (from S$15.90), Choco Banana (from S$14.90), and Green Tea (from S$13.90).

You can’t go wrong with the classic Injeolmi (from S$12.90), milky shaved ice topped with mini Korean rice cakes (tteok), roasted soybean powder and sliced almonds, served with a side of condensed milk. Sweet and nutty goodness!

There are two sizes to choose from — Regular or Large — along with the option of topping up for a scoop of Ice Cream (S$2), Cheese Cake (S$4), and extra Red Bean (S$2) and/or Almond (S$2).

Other sweet treats include Injeolmi Toast (S$9.90), Ice Cream Waffle (S$9.90), and Hotteok (S$6 per piece), or Korean sweet pancakes, which can be enjoyed as a set with ice cream for S$12.90.

But you shouldn’t dismiss the cafe’s savoury offerings, mainly street food like gimbap and tteokbokki with bulgogi sauce, spicy cheese, and/or ramen. The Special Tteokbokki (S$18.90) comes with spicy tteokbokki, dumplings, gimbap, and seaweed rolls — all the iconic Korean street food staples served on a single platter.

Otherwise, keep it classic with the Original Gimbap (S$11.90) comprising chicken ham, burdock, yellow pickled radish, cucumber, carrot, and egg, or go for crowd favourites like the Tuna Kimchi (S$13.90), Bulgogi (S$13.90), and Fried Shrimp (S$13.90).

If you (like me) have no plans of travelling to South Korea in the near future, a visit to Gangnam Cafe will have to do for now!

Is anyone else up for bingsu?
