PARKROYAL Beach Road has an authentic nasi kandar buffet throughout the month of ramadan with free-flow mamak-style dishes like prawn sambal, lamb tripe, ayam goreng & more

No trip to Penang, or anywhere in Malaysia, is ever complete without a nice mountainous (and oftentimes very messy) serving of nasi kandar.

This Ramadan, PARKROYAL Beach Road is collaborating with Nasi Kandar Jamal Mohamedyes, the famed stall from Penang — to bring you a memorable iftar feast titled Flavours of Curry and Tradition: A Nasi Kandar Affair

For those who don’t know what nasi kandar is, let me introduce you to this glorious dish. The dish is kinda like our cai fan or nasi padang, where ingredients like chicken, mutton, seafood, vegetables and more are piled onto your plate and doused in a medley of curries.

Weaved into PARKROYAL Beach Road’s existing all-you-can-eat dinner spread at Ginger, you can expect to find some of your favourite mamak dishes like Daging Masak Kicap (beef brisket cooked in dark soy sauce), Perut Kambing (lamb tripe curry), Sotong Bawang (squid with onions), Sambal Udang (prawn sambal) and so much more.

And yes, the Nasi Kandar spread will be part of Ginger’s dinner spread, which means you can eat all your favourite dishes because everything is free-flow — how awesome is that? Do note though that the buffet is only available for dinner, but I’m not complaining because I won’t have to worry about the food coma kicking in.

One of the things I love the most about the food at Nasi Kandar Jamal Mohamed is the Nasi Minyak (steamed ghee rice) that pairs perfectly with the medley of curries. But if you prefer something a little more filling, they also have Nasi Biryani (spiced basmati rice) and Blue Pea Flower Coconut Rice available.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! The choices for chicken include Ayam Goreng Bawang (fried chicken with onions) as well as the Ayam Masak Madu (chicken cooked in honey sauce). The fried chicken really wowed me. The chicken was perfectly marinated with a good balance of spices. The meat was also very juicy. Yes even the breast meat.

One of Nasi Kandar Jamal Mohamed’s signatures is the Daging Masak Kicap (beef brisket cooked with dark soy sauce). The beef was coated in a lightly spicy gravy, yielding oh so tender meat. If you love a good beef rendang, this is a great substitute.

Other meat options in the spread include Perut Kambing (lamb tripe curry) and the Kambing Shank (lamb shank curry). The former is only available from Mondays to Thursdays, and the latter is available from Fridays to Sundays.

With every Nasi Kandar stall, there will always be some seafood options available. On the seafood front are dishes like Kari Ikan (fish curry), Sambal Udang (prawn sambal), Sambal Ketam (crab sambal), and Mamak-style Baby Lobster. The crab sambal is only available from Mondays to Thursdays, while the lobster is available from Fridays to Sundays.

My favourite is the Sotong Bawang (squid with onions). It was chewy, sweet, spicy and very flavourful. The onions made the sambal extra flavourful, and honestly I could just eat the sambal with the rice all day.

If you still have space for dessert after all that eating, you can hop over to Ginger’s dessert table and indulge in some sweet treats like Nonya kuehs, Rose Bandung ice cream, assorted fruits and more.
