The revamped Food Haus in Ang Mo Kio now has black truffle roast duck, spiced fried chicken, Japanese nanban katsu, fishball noodles & more

Remember when we first reviewed Food Haus along Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 that brands itself as “Singapore’s first IG-worthy kopitiam“, back in March 2023?

Since then, the perpetually buzzy food court has undergone a revamp, with a couple of new stalls in the mix. For instance, Hong Yun Mix Veg Rice, Hola, and Ng Guan Chilli Pan Mee are no longer around, but you can still find a diverse range of local and international cuisines.

During our recent visit, I couldn’t wait to check out the exciting new offering from Tham’s Roasted Delights, the Cantonese-style roasted meats stall run by a chef who previously worked at Imperial Treasure and Crystal Jade.

Yes, Food Haus is Singapore’s first and only kopitiam to serve Black Truffle Roast Duck (S$55 for whole, S$28 for half)!

I’ve only ever tried black truffle roast duck at buffet restaurant Estate in Hilton Singapore Orchard, which is served in tasting portions, so this certainly makes for a good alternative especially if you want to indulge in a lot more duck.

The strikingly jet black duck is slathered in a legit black truffle paste before being roasted, yielding crisp, yet fatty skin that lifts easily away from the soft, juicy meat beneath.

As someone who has had her fair share of dry and overpriced roast duck, I was really, really impressed by the calibre of the duck here. Who said you could only enjoy premium duck at high-end Chinese restaurants?

Pre-orders must be placed via Whatsapp (+65 9652 2350) at least one day in advance — I reckon it’ll make for a great centerpiece at your upcoming festive gatherings!

Moving on to some of the new entrants, you can get your fix of hearty Western food from Three Little Chicks.

The young hawker-run stall specialises in Signature XL Chicken Chop (S$8.90) and Signature XL Chicken Cutlet (S$9.50), but it was the lip-smacking Fried Chicken (from S$7.90 for 2pcs) that did it for me. The stall only uses the thigh and drumstick AKA the best parts of the chicken, marinated overnight in a unique house-blend of 20 different herbs and spices.

All grilled and fried mains come with two sides (all of which are priced at S$3 for a la carte) of your choice — you must, must order the addictive Onion Rings, which are prepared using fresh (not frozen) onions and fried to order.

If you’re craving Japanese cuisine, Sui Xin Wu has got your back with their extensive selection of donburi, curry don, pitan cheese aburi don , and ishinabe (hot stone pot rice) with proteins like Teriyaki Chicken (S$6.90), Kurobuta Pork (S$9.90), and Unagi (S$11.90).

I loved the Pork Nanban Katzu (S$9.90), topped with a chunky egg salad-esque nanban sauce, which comes in a set with potato salad, rice, and soup. Very value-for-money.

Otherwise, keep it classic with a Fishball Noodle Dry (S$3.50) from Sheng Kee Fishball Noodle. Soup lovers will enjoy the Minced Meat Noodle Soup (S$4.50), comprising minced meat, meatballs, pork liver, mushrooms, chopped lettuce, springy noodles, and a generous serving of pork lard in a comforting broth, that was a little too easy to slurp up.

As for the regular stalls, Niu Xiao Er remains a popular spot for authentic Chinese fare like Chongqing grilled fish, BBQ skewers, mala xiang guo, and hearty stews like the Stewed Pork Ribs w Green Bean (S$25) that can easily feed four diners.

They’ve also rolled out two off-menu dishes, the chewy, collagen-rich Stir Fry Pork Knuckle (干煸猪脚) and Lamb Rack (烤羊排), both of which pair excellently with beer.

Chiangmai Thai Kitchen, which we didn’t get to cover during our first visit, makes a mean Thai Claypot Vermicelli (S$18), or goong ob woonsen, in all its gingery and peppery goodness.

And of course, mookata chain Bangkok Street Mookata continues to be one of the most popular stalls in the entire food court, with crowds flocking down for their platters (from S$25 for 2 pax) and tantalising dipping sauces.

There’s something for everyone here, but I know I’ll be heading down to Food Haus for more truffle roast duck very soon — what about you?
