Since the closure of Twelve Cupcakes, we have sought to fill the cupcake-shaped void it left in our lives. With that, our quest has led us to what we’d consider one of the best foodie finds in a while: Plain Vanilla.
Call us dramatic, but the rows of beautifully garnished treats displayed in the storefront had us sold at first sight. If you’re a fellow sweet tooth or dessert fanatic, you’re going to want to know all about this cafe.
Although Plain Vanilla isn’t considered a household name, it has grown a substantial fanbase since its humble opening in 2011. Now, the brand spans a whopping 10 locations across Singapore, thanks to its delicious cupcakes.
If you head down to its store, some common cupcake flavours you can expect are the Cinnamon Brown Sugar, Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, and Strawberry White Chocolate (S$4.80+). The bakery also boasts an expanded range of pastries such as croissants and cinnamon rolls, plus some savoury brunch selections. Do note that these pastries may vary across locations.
We visited its Upper Thomson location and were immediately impressed by its soothing aesthetic. It felt like the perfect environment to work, read, or simply relax in over a cup of warm coffee and cake. We tried a Black Sesame Miso Caramel Cupcake (S$4.80) and a warm Cafe Latte (S$6), which converted us from happy diners into die-hard fans on the first bite.
The cake itself was rather crumbly and not too sweet, and had a strong black sesame flavour. When paired with the buttercream and the slightly salty Miso Caramel filling, it created the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and nuttiness that had us longing for more. The velvety latte, as expected, served as a great palate cleanser so that the richness of the cupcake doesn’t feel overwhelming.
Plain Vanilla is also currently selling an Easter special, featuring cupcakes and goodies that are almost too cute to eat. From bunny hot cross buns to cupcakes decorated with Easter-themed sugar cookies, it’ll easily be a crowd-pleaser for any Easter parties you may want to throw.
