5 things to expect at THE COMMUNE, a lifestyle mall with a sports complex, arcade, plethora of food options and more

by Letresa Yap

Located in Kulai, Johor, just under an hour’s drive from the Singapore border, THE COMMUNE is one of the newest additions to the retail scene in Malaysia. Officially opened in September 2024, the three-story lifestyle mall offers more than just shopping.

THE COMMUNE was designed as a hybrid lifestyle destination to house retail, dining, sports, and leisure in one contemporary space. Whether you’re a Singaporean seeking a new hangout spot for a day trip or a Johor Bahru (JB) resident looking for a modern hangout spot, THE COMMUNE stands out as a mall you must visit.

1. Active Lifestyle

THE COMMUNE’s emphasis on an active lifestyle is what makes it unique. Unlike most malls that focus purely on retail and dining, THE COMMUNE combines recreation and lifestyle under one roof.

Sports Affairs at the mall is a sports complex featuring 10 badminton courts, two basketball courts, and three pickleball courts — perfect for those who want to squeeze in some fun physical activity before or after shopping.

The badminton courts are available daily with rates starting from RM16 (approximately S$4.93 ) per hour during weekday mornings, and up to RM27 (approximately S$8.32) in the evenings. Weekends and public holidays are at RM25 (approximately S$7.70) during the day, and RM16 (approximately S$4.93) for a Sunday night game.

        4. Budget-friendly Fashion

Shoppers looking for budget-friendly fashion will enjoy browsing Good2U Concept Store, a popular Malaysian apparel brand with over six outlets within JB. The brand is well known for their basic tees, sweaters, and lounge pants.

There’s also Lido Trading, an arcade-style claw machine venue where you can test your luck and win adorable prizes if you’re travelling with kids, or just an avid claw-machine lover.

What makes THE COMMUNE Lifestyle Mall special is how it redefines what a shopping mall can be. It’s not just a place to buy things — it’s a place to do things.

Whether you’re there for badminton, to enjoy a dessert-filled afternoon, or running errands with the family, THE COMMUNE offers a mix of convenience and entertainment.

For Singapore visitors, the journey to THE COMMUNE takes about 37 minutes from the JB Checkpoint, depending on traffic at the Causeway. If you’re planning your next weekend escape to Johor, this lifestyle mall deserves a spot on your itinerary.
