There’s no doubt about it — one can never have too many sandwiches. And if you’re willing to travel all the way to the west for them? Even better.

Popular cafe Penny University has joined forces with Muslim-owned gourmet butchery The Meatery to open a cosy cafe and deli at Clementi Arcade along Sunset Way specialising in, you guessed it, hearty sourdough-based sandwiches.

Indeed, the sandwich line-up at Deli by The Meatery is pretty enticing. Not only can you find creations inspired by the iconic bodega sandwiches New York is famous for, but every single one is served with a side of chips.

Both the NY’s Bodega Chopped Cheese (S$16.80), comprising chopped (minced) juicy beef cooked with a medley of peppers, mixed cheese, jalapeno, and garlic aioli, as well as the hefty Reubenesque (S$17.80), which sees thicc layers of warm Lychee wood-smoked beef pastrami, sauerkraut, caramelised onions, melty cheese, and honey mustard, will save you a trip to the Big Apple (for now).

Meat lovers will probably go crazy for the Tiga Decker (S$16.80), which is packed with three types of meats: nitrate-free smoked chicken ham, house corned grass-fed beef brisket, and lychee wood-smoked beef bacon, alongside argula, tomato, gherkins, and a garlic aioli to balance everything out.

Don’t sleep on the Ayam Percik Burger (S$14.80), crispy battered chicken dipped in sos percik (a savoury, coconut-y and mildly spicy sauce) on brioche buns, jazzed up with pickled onions and crunchy romaine lettuce. Add on an Egg (S$1.50) if you like.

Otherwise, chow down on all-day breakfast options like the Butcher’s Breakfast (S$19.80), a platter of angus picanha steak, chimichurri sauce, handmade chilli sausage, cajun roasted potatoes, and scrambled eggs that will set you up for a long day ahead.

If you’re not feeling that hungry, they’ve also got a small selection of bakes, like chunky cookies and muffins, best paired with coffee. Try the Spiked Muddy — it’s essentially Penny University’s signature Muddy Espresso (espresso and chilled milk) infused with gula melaka.

Sure, the location may not be the most convenient, but it sure beats an 18-hour flight to New York!

Will you be popping by for coffee and a sandwich (or two)?
