As Singaporeans, we love to debate about everything: food, weather, and most of all, which side of Singapore is the best side. While many discussions focus on the West or East side, people are missing out on the Northeast side.
What makes the Northeast side the best side is the Folk Yard cafe, launched in September 2022. For the past three years, the queue of people lining up outside Folk Yard, which is also conveniently located beside Potong Pasir Mass Rapid Train (MRT) station, has been a familiar sight for Potong Pasir residents.
Most cafes we’ve been to specialise in either their sides, snacks, drinks, or desserts of some kind. But to our pleasant surprise, every dish at Folk Yard was consistently excellent, particularly their pizza and sandwiches.
Pizzas and sandwiches are, regrettably, de-clashed according to timing, with the pizzas only being available after 6pm, while sandwiches are available before that time.
Amongst all the sandwiches, Patty Melt (S$20) and Grilled Cheese (S$18) are a hit with both regular and new customers. We preferred the Breakfast Sandwich (S$18), as each bite gave us the sensation of a big morning Western breakfast.
A cup of coffee, tea, or both is another necessity for a large Western breakfast. We’re sure you’ll enjoy our favourite beverages, which are Matcha (S$6.50), Rose Lychee Tea (S$6), and Mocha (S$7). For an additional S$1, the drinks can also be served with ice, oat milk, or an extra shot of espresso.
For the pizza selection, the Breakfast Club (S$19) is our personal favourite and best-selling pizza. The doughy base and the runny egg combine to create the perfect texture that resembles an entire breakfast in a bite.
Try the Cheesy Baby (S$20) or You Asked for Pasta (S$20) for a pizza with cheese or beef instead, if you don’t like runny eggs on your pizza.
Top your mains with crispy homemade Onion Rings (S$12) or Sweet Potatoes (Small for S$6, Large for S$12) to complete either the brunch or the late-night dining experience.
The debate over whether the East or West side has better food is settled. Our judgement? Without a doubt, Northeasties win.
