When you think of a quick weekend escape, Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia, is the first location that springs to mind.
JB is a popular place for Singaporeans to unwind quickly, whether it’s for blind box hunting or indulging in reasonably priced massage services.
If you asked me, the only reason why I’ll ever be in JB at the crack of dawn is to avoid the queue for Kam Long Ah Zai Fish Head Curry.

For my first-timer JB visitors, you can easily spot the famous fish head curry by walking along Jalan Wong Ah Fook and looking out for a string of hungry, eager customers waiting right outside the restaurant.
For my seasoned JB travellers, this has been a familiar sight for the past 42 years, except on Mondays, when the establishment is closed.
However, it has not always been all sunshine and rainbows at the restaurant, though, as rumours have it that the owners split up in 2010 (what a painful break-up!).
One stayed in Jalan Wong Ah Fook, while the other moved to Jalan Meldrum and started his own business under the name of Kim Loong Curry Fish Head.

If you’re wondering which fish head curry spot tastes better, I can safely assure you that Kam Long Fish Head Curry is the best.
Given that I’m not the biggest fan of anything fish-related, it’s an extremely high rating because the entire dish consistently doesn’t have any lingering piscine flavour.

The eatery, as the name suggests, only serves Fish Head or Fish Tail Curry, with sizes ranging from Small (26RM), Medium (38RM), or Large (53RM).
Regulars are known to order extra side dishes, like extra crispy Beancurd Skin (6RM) or a juicy assortment of vegetables called Acar (6RM).
If you can’t decide which fish part or size to try, order the Medium size and the Fish Tail curry will give you more bang for your buck.
Because, believe me, once you taste it, you’ll quickly realise that the Small portion is not enough due to the addictive sensation from the milky assam curry and the tender fish meat.
Even I would risk burning my tongue just to savour the soft fish, soaked beancurd skin, and warm white rice without wasting any more time.

Once I had my fill of the fish head curry, I wrapped up my experience by ordering a cup of fresh Fruit Juice (3RM) to clear my palate from the heatiness of the curry.
Even just writing this article makes my mouth water, and I can’t wait to return to Kam Long!
