Bing Tang Hu Lu, or candied hawthorn is pretty elusive in Singapore. I’ve always wanted to try it after watching Chinese period dramas, but that craving could never be satisfied as there didn’t seem to be a place in Singapore that sells the traditional sweet treat — until now.

Hidden within the streets of Geylang, Kang Ji Bing Tang Hu Lu is an authentic specialty store that sells not only candied hawthorne sticks, but also other candied delicacies like candied strawberry (S$5) and more.

Other than the usual candied hawthorn sticks, the store also carries a variety of different, innovative flavours — some of which have been inspired by our own sunny island like durian (S$5.90). Sugar, hawthorne and durian…I wonder how that would taste?
Other flavour combinations also include purple sweet potato (S$6.90), matcha (S$6.90), chestnut (S$4.90), and many more.

If you want to try out all the flavours but don’t want to overdo it on the sugar, Kang Ji Bing Tang Hu Lu also has mini versions of the candied hawthorn sticks (S$13 for 5) — and they look ridiculously adorable and perfect for IG and TikTok.

According to the store, some of their best sellers include the glutinous rice candied hawthorn (S$4.90) and red bean candied hawthorn (S$4.90) — both of which are available in the mini versions too.

Many people get the candied hawthorne sticks for takeaway, but there are also a couple of seats at the front of the store for those who want to enjoy their sweet treat and people watch at the same time — sounds like a really wholesome way to spend the afternoon!
The next time you have a sweet tooth and hankering for a decadent treat, check out Kang Ji Bing Tang Hu Lu’s unique candied hawthorn creations — plus, they’re healthier too (maybe?). ‘
