We’ve had plenty of sporting events to look forward to, from the ongoing FIFA World Cup to the Olympics earlier this year, and here’s something a little closer to home – the Singapore Regatta Waterfest @ Sports Hub 2022. Singapore’s biggest dragon boat race will be held over two weekends, 26 to 27 November 2022, and 3 to 4 December 2022 at the Sports Hub.

The action-packed race is free to watch, so you can cheer on your favourite teams! With various dragon boating groups competing, the Regatta promises to be an action-packed one. For the first time in the Regatta, there’ll be the Hong Kong Cup, where teams battle it out for the chance to challenge the Hong Kong dragon boating team.

To make it a little easier to watch the race, here’s what you need to know about dragon boating. Dragon boating originated in the Tang Dynasty to celebrate the dragon water deity, with regattas recorded as early as the 14th century, and the tradition continues today after it became an official sport.

For those who are unfamiliar with the sport, each team is made up of 22 members, and each member has a unique role to play. The drummer keeps the rhythm the team paddles to, the steerer controls the general direction the boat moves in, and the paddlers keep up the pace. The team sits in a forward position facing the boat, and together, they propel it forward.

For this regatta, the teams are formed from government associations, polytechnic and ITE teams, corporate and community sports clubs, and para-athletes, bringing together dragon boaters from all walks of life. You’ll even see members of the International Dragon Boat Community (IDBC) joining the race!

There’ll be more than 10 races, divided into different categories: Singapore Regatta Waterfest, tertiary students, and international teams being the ones to compete for the Hong Kong Cup, with the three champion teams including the Hong Kong team. Teams competing include the Japan Dragons, the Latin Dragons, and more talented dragon boaters!
