Ever heard of Morimori Yogashi, Hello Arigato or The Better Half? Seasoned cafe hoppers would probably have one of these places on their radar. 

Well, another humble bakery joining the ranks is The Flour Department which serves specialty bagels, pastries as well as hot dishes (save this for your next trip to the hipster neighbourhood).

As a cosy and hole-in-the-wall bakery, The Flour Department operates slightly differently compared to its neighbours where their menu rotates monthly and the items may vary according to availability. 

If you don’t wanna make a wasted trip down, I’d highly suggest checking in before heading down! 

There are dine-in seatings as well, but it’s a small space so perhaps a pit stop for afternoon tea or brunch?

But, enough chit-chat and let’s talk about the food. 

Many people have been raving about the bestseller Original Salt Bread (S$2.80) boasting a crispy exterior and fluffy inside topped with flaky sea salt. 

Hearsay the buttery aroma is enough to make your stomach growl so it comes with no surprise that it has become their fastest pastry to sell out (come early if you wanna get your hands on it!). 

Alternatively, the Truffle Salt Bread (S$3.50) is an elevated version of it with umami-rich truffle and is best eaten on the spot when it is fresh out of the oven.

Of course, you have to try a bagel or two so why not start with the Peanut Muah Chee Bagel (S$6.80)? 

The bagel is encased with an oh-so-chewy muah chee with a burst of light and fragrant peanut cream. If you love muah chee, this one is not to be missed. 

For something a little more savoury, go for the Salted Egg Yolk Bagel (S$15) with crispy cereal chicken and garlic butter or Aburi Mentaiko Egg Mayo Bagel (S$14) for lunch instead.

Those who successfully manage to score a seat to dine-in, make sure to try the Creamy Shakshuka (S$18). Unlike the usual shakshuka with a tomato-base, this one has a cream baseloaded with potatoes, chicken ham, cheese, and mushroom topped with black truffle and crispy lotus root. It pairs perfectly with their foccacia bread.

Besides bread and hot dishes, they also serve pastries like Black Sesame Mochi Peanut Butter with Matcha Cake-in-a-tart (S$12) and Taro Pandan Chiffon Cookie Butter Cake-in-a-tart (S$8.90). 

The latter is for all the hardcore taro fanatics — enjoy a smooth and generous amount of taro paste encased in pandan chiffon sprinkled with sweet cookie crumbs.

Looking for something to wash it all down with?

Get the Strawberry Mochi Milk Latte (S$8) or Pure Pistachio Latte (S$8) which comprises a thick and nutty pistachio paste in milk — not going to lie, a cup of it sounds so good right now. 

With so many options to choose from, I’d hardly know where to start if I was there! If I were you, I’d hurry down before everything sells out!

It’s not hard to admit that the bread game in Japan is on a whole other level. 

That is why I was so excited to discover Morimori Yogashi Bakery in Everton Park selling Japanese pastries (now I can have a taste of Japan without travelling). 

Headed by a young chef who formerly worked at Marina Bay Sands and a Michelin star restaurant for three years perfecting his craft, you can expect to find a fusion of French and Japanese bread here. 

If you’re not sure where to start, get the signature Fujisawa Garlic Cheese (S$3) loaded with Japanese mayo filling and a ton of garlic for an intense garlicky flavour. 

One piece is never enough (at least for me), but luckily they offer it in various bundles such as S$6 for two pieces or S$11 for four pieces. 

Just don’t eat it before a first date if you know what I mean. 

Another crowd favourite is the Japanese Mentaiko Seaweed Cheese Bread (S$12 for 4 pcs) featuring a generous spread of cod fish roe mixed with mayo on a soft bun.

Every bite is a burst of creamy umami with a slight heat — super delicious.  

They’ve got other breads as well such as Shio Pan, Japanese Curry and Japanese Sweet Potato Bread starting from S$2. 

If you’re with company and feeling a little peckish, the Large Signature Fujisawa Garlic Bread (S$9) is more than enough to keep everyone satisfied.

Bread can get filling rather quickly but you can always try out their mini snacks instead. 

Go for the Kinako Warabi Mochi (S$13.90 for 16 pcs) or the Matcha Warabi Mochi (S$14.90 for 16 pcs). It comes coated in a nutty and earthy powder, so feel free to enjoy it with kuromitsu syrup (black sugar) for a subtle sweetness.

The perfect treat if you enjoy food with chewy and soft textures. 

Speaking of chilled desserts, enjoy their limited edition Hokkaido Milk with Premium Mao Shan Wang Durian Puff (S$36 for 6 pcs). You can tell that they don’t skimp on ingredients here from the lava-filled durian cream.

If you consider yourself a durian connoisseur, get the Hokkaido Milk with D24 Durian Puff (S$28 for 6 pcs) which may just steal your heart.

Want something to bring home? 

The Hokkaido Milk Roll (S$15) comes in various flavours including Mango Passionfruit, Taro Yam, Matcha Yuzu Red Bean and more!

Sink your teeth into the light and fluffy sponge cake, layered with soft velvety cream. 

If you’re not going to Japan anytime soon, Morimori Yogashi Bakery is a good place to satisfy those cravings (I mean the choices that you can get are truly endless).

Having moved out of Robertson Quay’s The Herencia in March 2022, the incredibly popular sandwich joint has made its long-awaited comeback, taking over the space previously occupied by Pickle Bakery.

Unfortunately, cafes and eateries in the hipster enclave that is Everton Park often face the same issue — a lack of space. Seating here is limited to a single wooden bench (if you don’t mind the poor ventilation system, that is), as well as a couple of foldable camping chairs outside the store.

You’re better off getting your sandwiches to go — the Outram Park area is your oyster.

Early birds who visit at 8am can enjoy All-Day Brekkie (three sourdough sando options) alongside juices, kombucha, and specialty coffee from Double Up Coffee.

Drop by from 11am onwards for 46 Mittsu’s full line-up of ciabatta sandwiches.

The signature BEC (S$14), which stands for bacon, egg, and cheese, is a reliable favourite from the old menu, while the Korean-inspired Firebird (S$15) — gochujang fried chicken, purple slaw, and a sunny side up — showcases big, bold, and punchy flavours.

For something a little more unconventional, try the Catfish (S$18), consisting of marinated raw tuna, fried wanton skin, and a spicy papaya salad.

All sandos can be made heftier with add-ons like Hashbrown (S$2), Avocado (S$3), or Fried Halloumi (S$3). Otherwise, go for a side of crispy Brussel Sprouts (S$8) if you’re still feeling peckish.

These sensational sandos tend to sell out very quickly, especially on weekends — you know what to do.
