Jalan Besar is home to some unique food spots from speakeasy bars, to hidden hawker gems and even mookata. But did you know Jalan Besar is also home to this underrated French-Japanese fusion restaurant? Plus, the restaurant also has live lobster — so you best bet we had to check it out!

Savoureux is located at level one of Amrise Hotel Kitchener and fun fact, they’re Muslim-owned too, which means everyone can enjoy their yummy fusion dishes here. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Hisyam Mustafa and while the space might look a little unassuming at first, the food served here definitely takes you on a gastronomical adventure.

Kick off your meal with a very fancy yet comforting bowl of French Onion Soup (S$12.90). Let me just say, this was only the beginning of the meal and already I found my favourite dish — which also happens to be the crowd-favourite here, and I can see why.

The soup comprises caramelised onions, beef chunks, toast, and a generous amount of cheese to give you an oh so satisfying and IG-worthy cheese pull. I loved how each element in this soup complemented each other. The beef chunks added a nice beefiness to the soup, while the onions added a nice sweetness and subtle crunch.

This dish is best enjoyed when hot so that you can enjoy the glorious cheese pull. Apart from the pull, the cheese also added a nice cheesy touch to the soup. My only gripe is that I wished the toast was served alongside the soup instead of inside, so that you can still enjoy the crispiness of it.

Just when I thought the meal couldn’t get any better, in came the Smoked Duck Truffle Pasta (S$25.90). Truffle lovers (like myself) will definitely enjoy this one. The dish comprises spaghetti, shiitake mushroom, truffle paste, garlic cream, sous vide egg, topped with shredded parmesan cheese.

The fragrance of the truffle paste had me hooked from start to finish. The garlic cream was super creamy and fragrant, which really helped to tie the whole dish together. Bonus points for the bits of garlic that was in the cream sauce!

But the star of the show was the thick slices of smoked duck. I loved that the smoked duck had a nice smokey flavour, and it wasn’t too salty. Paired with the creamy truffle paste and this dish was simply perfection

We also tried the Gyudon (S$23.90) which came with Angus beef cubes, sous vide egg, sushi rice, and pickled radish. I loved that they used sushi rice for the dons which complemented the savoury beef and sweet pickled radish. I only wished that the beef was cooked medium rare instead of well done, but that’s just a personal preference.

Unfortunately, Savoureux did not have the live lobster on the day we visited, but oh well, guess we now have a reason to go back for their Lobster Thermidor (S$69.90)and more truffle pasta.

After all that feasting, you’re gonna need something to wash down the food. Savoureux has a unique selection of drinks including Butter Beer (from S$12.90), and classic mocktails like Espresso Martini (S$12.90).

If you do visit Savoureux, you definitely must get their Butter Beer which comes in four different flavours — mango, watermelon, peach and original. We went with the original and wow the sweet cream froth was smooth and creamy. The sweetness of the cream really blended well with the fizzy sarsaparilla — I’d say this is one of the better versions of better beer I’ve tasted.

For something a little more refreshing, you can go for the Lychee Mojito (S$12.90). I really loved the touch of sourness from the lime, which helps to cut the grease from the food. This sweet and fizzy drink was perfect for the hot sunny day.
