Happy World Toilet Day, where we’re all gathered here today to show our appreciation to Singapore’s readily available public toilets for all to share.
We’re going to ask our colleagues what their best and worst toilet encounters are.

Our Best Public Toilet Experience
Changi Airport Jewel

Selena: Hands down, Jewel Changi Airport has the best toilets. We’re crowned the best airport for a reason; it’s so clean and smells so good, I feel like I could sleep there.
Nicole: Jewel Level one near the Coach has the most spacious cubicles in the toilet. There are even cushioned seats near the sinks where friends can wait for each other while pooping.
Despite pooping in the cubicles, the overall toilet still remains fragrant. Unfortunately, I can’t remember if there are bidets available at all Jewel Changi toilets or if it’s only on the first floor.

Capitol

Yan: The best public toilet experience is the Capitol Theatre Level one, right in front of the entrance. It’s cosy, has a bidet, is clean, and is always dry. The downside is there’s always no tissue available for you to dry your hands, so you’ll need to grab some from the cubicle!
It’s a good option for me when I need to poop after lunch but can’t make it back to the office in time.

TripleOne Somerset

Ash: I’d say the best is 111 Somerset Level one, right beside the NTUC Fairprice. It’s a lot cleaner and has fewer people compared to the toilets around the area, such as 313 Somerset or SCAPE*.
It even has nice mirrors and also smells pretty decent. I’ve seen on the signboards that there’s actually a shower area too, but I personally have not utilised it.

Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre

Jae: Suntec City’s toilets aren’t even that good; in fact, I would go through the maze of a mall just to use the toilets at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition.
I can’t recall which floor it is, but the way you have to access it is by getting on the long escalator beside the Suntec City entrance and reaching the storey where the floors are carpeted.
I was there for Public Garden, Hobbies Fair, and even my convocation ceremony, and I would run for the handicapped cubicle. It’s the only cubicle with a bidet and adequate space to move around, which makes the experience pleasant.
Other perks that are not bathroom-related would be the water dispenser, where you can fill up your empty water bottles instead of buying water.

Our Worst Public Toilet Experience
East Coast Park Toilet D1

Selena: My worst experience would definitely be East Coast Park. Doesn’t matter which specific toilet; I think all of them are bad! Everywhere is dirty, smelly, wet, and muddy — you name it, they’ve got it.
There are even bugs and cockroaches that I saw at some cubicles, and people who used it can’t even flush because it gets choked so badly.
Jae: The public toilets at McDonald’s, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL), and East Coast Lagoon aren’t too bad if you’re urgent for a public toilet. Might be a slight issue if you’re at the end of the East Coast Park, as it may take a 20-minute walk to get there.

Plaza Singapura Basement 2

Yan: My worst experience is none other than Plaza Singapura, especially their Basement two toilet. It’s so gross; I saw a cockroach by the door, but I was halfway pooping, so I had to lock in and stay nonchalant so it didn’t fly to my face.
It was my top nerve-wracking experience in my 25 years of life because what do I do if the cockroach starts flying? If it wants the cubicle, it can have it!

SuperBowl Jurong

Ash: I think the worst toilet I ever went to was at SuperBowl Jurong; there were no tissues, and I was unable to lock the door.
When I tried to use the other cubicle, it was filled with puke, and I assume that’s because there are a few bars around there.

Mr Teh Tarilk @ Jurong West

Radhi: Public toilet at Mr Teh Tarik Eating House, Jurong West. There were poop stains on the floor and pee all over the seat.
The worst part was how badly I needed to poop. So I had no choice but to clean up the toilet seat as much as I could before I sat down on the nasty toilet seat. Worst toilet experience ever.
