Tanjong Pagar may be a hotspot for cafe-goers, but not many venture down south to the Cantonment area, which is more commonly associated with residential and office spaces.

But you now have a reason to, given that a hidden cafe that has sprouted up along Cantonment Link for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle — South Side Keppel.

The neighbourhood cafe and coffeehouse prides itself on being a safe and inclusive space where patrons can gather over “wholesome and familiar dishes and desserts”. Two different menus are available; one serving Brunch, and the other, Dinner.

Let brunch be a hearty affair with mains like the popular Crispy Chicken & Waffle (S$20), Lemon Herb Salmon Grain Bowl (S$20), and South Side’s Big Breakfast (S$24), comprising bacon, cheese, pork sausage, sauteed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, cracked potatoes, sourdough, and mesclun — the full works.

One dish that stands out is the Switz Rosti (from S$10), crispy and golden Swiss rosti served with lemon and a dollop of sour cream. Feel free to opt for an add-on of Sauteed Mushroom (S$14), Cheese Sausage (S$16), or Grilled Salmon (S$20).

The Dinner menu features a couple of dishes from the Brunch menu, but with slightly “fancier” plates like Pan Seared Barramundi (S$18), vegetarian Moussaka (S$18), and even Bouillabaisse (S$24), a concentrated seafood broth chock full of Argentina red leg shrimp, blue mussels, seasonal fish, asari fish, and squid.

As you should be able to tell by now, South Side Keppel really caters to those on plant-based diets as quite a number of dishes can be made vegetarian-friendly.

But of course, there are plenty of curated vegetarian and vegan options to choose from, such as the Smashed Avo Sourdough Toast (S$16), Buddha Bowl (S$16), and Pesto Fettuccine (S$14).

You can also find a good selection of coffee, beers and cocktails on tap, alongside desserts like Goma Flan and Lychee Rose Tarts (from S$9), Earl Grey Lavender Burnt Cheesecake (from S$8/slice), and an intriguing Smoked Cheese and Honey Comb Ice Cream (S$6) that sounds right up my alley.

So, whether you’re in the mood to indulge or eat healthy, there’s definitely something for everyone here!
