The only gripe that I have is that it can get rather pricey, especially with the GST hike. 

Fortunately for us, Bao Bei Dé Village is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Johor Bahru that sells affordable ramen and sushi from just S$1.30 (RM4.50). 

Also, who would have thought that this place is conveniently located just a five minutes drive away from the checkpoint?

Their menu features a decent selection of ramen including their signature Char Siew Ramen (S$5.90, RM20.90) with thinly sliced braised pork with narutomaki (fish cake) and jammy soft-boiled eggs. 

Asides that, you can also order a piping hot bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen (S$5.90, RM20.90) cooked in a delectable creamy pork bone broth that can never go wrong for dinner.
However, if you’re the sort to always add heaping amounts of chilli powder into your ramen, you might want to try out the Mala Tonkotsu Ramen (S$5.90, RM20.90) for a spicy kick.

Still hungry? 

Add on the crispy Fried Salmon Skin (S$2, RM7) or an ala carte portion of the sweet-savoury Japanese Char Siew (S$2.90, RM9.90) that should delight any meat lover. 

Sushi-wise, the menu boasts an extensive selection including maki roll, aburi nigiri and gunkan sushi and more.

I can never get enough of mentaiko and I was pleasantly surprised to discover their selection of mentaiko-based maki rolls and aburi nigiri sushi. 

I’m talking Ebi Mentai Sushi (S$2, RM7), Unagi Mentai Roll (S$5.40, RM18.90) and Salmon Mentai Roll (S$5.10, RM17.90) — perfect for solo diners or if you’re with company.

However, you’d probably be famished at this point after a day’s worth of shopping at the nearby City Square Mall, so a few pieces of sushi isn’t going to cut it. 

Don’t worry because they have lunch staples like California Roll (S$5.70, RM19.90), Soft Shell Crab Ebiko Roll (S$5.40, RM18.90), and Ebi Mango Roll (S$6.90, RM23.90) generously packed with ingredients.

Otherwise, classics like Tuna Mayo Gunkan, Salmon Sushi and Chuka Idako Gunkan are super value-for-money, starting from just S$1.30 (RM4.50).

That said, come on an empty stomach because you’ll be spoiled with choices.

If you’re the type to reach for the freshest salmon at the conveyor belt the minute you’re seated down, this sushi bar is a dream come true. 

I’m talking crowd favourites like maguro, salmon, mekajiki, hamachi and even tobiko. Watch as the chef meticulously hand rolls these sushi right in front of you — it’s definitely value-for-money.

Or if you’re the type who prefers something a little more cooked, dive into the smoky and creamy salmon mentaiko and flame–seared aburi salmon.

I mean if you were to eat one sushi per minute, the total bill would be comparatively cheaper than the prices you’d find at other sushi outlets (well, that is if you can take it of course).

Come to think of it, it’d make a great place for upcoming dates, hangouts, or even for when you’re on a solo adventure and in the mood to treat yourself. 

It’s really hard to find such quality sushi for such an affordable price. 

And if that isn’t enough to keep your sushi cravings at bay, top up an additional S$3 to tuck into their sushi rolls, including california, unagi and furikake rolls. 

They literally have all your sushi cravings covered.

I mean, Serangoon Gardens is famous for plenty of supper spots, cheap hawker fare in Ang Mo Kio, and let’s not forget the huge array of cuisines which you can find in the basement of Bishan. 

Speaking of which, nestled just right next to Bishan MRT is Itacho Sushi Takeaway that offers sushi from just S$0.50 to S$2.60. 

Yes, you heard that right. 

The prices are super affordable for sushi. What’s even better is that you’ll be able to take it away, especially for those who are always on the go or on a solo adventure.

Although it is a quaint little shop, they do serve a decent variety of fresh sushi where you can personally pick out your own sushi plate. 

For all the sashimi lovers out there, get the Salmon Sushi (S$0.90) or Spicy Salmon with Cheese & Inari (S$2). If you want something heartier for lunch, the Tuna Salad with Ebiko Inari (S$1.30) bring some umami goodness to the table.

Or if you’re a mentaiko lover (I mean, how can you not be?), treat yourself to the Roasted Inari Mentaiko Sushi (S$0.90) and Boiled Scallop with Mentaiko (S$1.30). 

Classics like eel, inari and tamago are also available from S$0.70. 

Sushi not enough to fill your stomach?

Itacho sushi boasts a variety of Donburi and Noodles, including Sliced Beef Sukiyaki Rice (S$10.80), Japanese Curry with Sliced Pork Rice (S$11.70) and even Bara Chirashi (S$11).

I’ve never thought I would say this but you can get delectable sweet treats (my favourites) to end off the meal. 

Treat yourself to some Daifuku starting from S$3.90 including crowd favourites like green tea red bean and durian to less traditionally Japanese flavours like tiramisu.

We’ve been seeing a hype surrounding warabimochi recently and if you have yet to try it out, they sell Matcha and Kinako Warabi Mochi for S$6.20 each.

If you’re around the area and looking for a quick meal, you might want to consider Itacho’s sushi kiosk as you’ll be surprised with what you can find.
