I love being spoilt for choice when it come to Japanese omakase restaurants in Singapore. If you feel the same, and are in the mood to treat that special someone (or even yourself) to a memorable meal that won’t break the bank, here’s a unique concept worth checking out.
Conveniently located along Cecil Street near Raffles Place MRT station is Sushi to Sumi, an affordable Japanese omakase spot by the folks behind Araya Shoten, a wholesaler at Tanglin Mall.
They pride themselves as being Singapore’s first authentic standing sushi restaurant, so there are no seats. Yes, I repeat, no seats, so you’ll see diners standing at the L-shaped counter.
As someone who doesn’t mind standing and eating for a short period of time, especially if I’ve been been sitting at my desk all day, this is one concept I can definitely get by.
Prices start from S$30 for the 11-course Ume set, inclusive of eight pieces of sushi, a grilled seafood dish, and miso soup — super value-for-money.
Otherwise, the Take (S$45) and Matsu (S$80) sets come with 10 and 12 pieces of sushi respectively.
If you come by for dinner, you’ll get to indulge in slightly fancier omakase sets (from S$50 for Ume), alongside an a la carte menu featuring assorted sushi, sashimi, grilled seafood, and specialty dishes ranging from S$4 to S$18. Not full? No problem.
You can look forward to seasonal fish like suzuki (sea bass), mejina (largescale blackfish), and menuki (rockfish), as well as crowd favourites like chutoro, amaebi, and kinmedai.
There’s even a Happy Hour Menu, available from 5pm to 6.30pm, whereby diners who order more than one serving of alcohol can enjoy Okonomi Sushi (S$18 for three pieces).
It’s honestly such a steal, because you get 2pcs seasonal and 1pc premium sushi. For the latter, you’ll get to choose between Chutoro (U.P. S$15), Otoro (U.P. S$20), and even Uni (U.P. S$18). Sign me up.
Regardless of whether you’re an avid omakase-goer or not, you have to admit that prices here are a lot more reasonable as compared to other fancy Japanese restaurants, though one could argue that by standing, you burn calories at the same time, and can hence order and eat more…? Try it out for yourself!
I may or may not have already made a reservation for myself, and you should too.
