I’m always on the lookout for unique things to do when I travel. Some of the more unique experiences I’ve done so far include driving the real-life Mario Kart, conquering the walking ‘roller coaster’ and even going paragliding.
I’ve recently come across this interesting racing theme park also in Korea that takes go karting to a whole new level. If you love go-karting, you’ll wanna add this to your list.
9.81 Park is located between Aewol Beach and Hallasan in Jeju, South Korea, and is the world’s first smart racing theme park. The entire park looks and feels super futuristic — it’s kinda giving Meet the Robinsons vibes.
The main attraction here is the Gravity Racer ride and as its name suggests, the entire kart is powered by gravity acceleration. What this means is the kart has no engine and you’ll be relying purely on gravity to do all the work.
That said, you’ll still get quite a good speed boost — the regular karts can go up to 60km/h and the beginner karts up to 40km/h. While the kart is powered entirely by gravity, you’ll still be in charge of controlling the steering wheel and brakes.
There are a total of four different tracks and 10 different courses, each with their own unique twists and turns. The tracks promise a breathtaking view of the island — think clear blue skies, tall mountains peeking through the clouds, and smooth sandy beaches.
The Downhill Racing offers scenic views of the blue sea while the Uphill Racing provides a breathtaking view of the Halla Mountain. You’ll definitely be able to enjoy the views while taking a nice leisure drive, especially during the uphill drive as the kart will cruise automatically — yay! Don’t have to worry about getting stuck!
There’ll even be recordings of your session, which you will be able to keep and post onto your socials — how thoughtful is that? For those travelling with young kids, there’s also two-seater karts available for you and your young one to enjoy the ride together.
You don’t need a driving licence to operate the vehicles, however you will need to be certified by RACE 981. Each successful registration will entitle you to a Tester Licence which you can use to complete the races. You’ll be able to upgrade your licence to Beginner, Veteran or even Master based on your race records.
Apart from Gravity Racing, 9.81 Park also has other exciting activities like neon lit bumper cars that come equipped with joysticks instead of a steering wheel which makes it feel like you’re driving a spaceship.
Adrenaline junkies can try out the sky swing which is the world’s first extreme swing that rotates a whole 360 degrees — definitely not one for the faint hearted.
There’s also laser tag, VR racing, experiential games and so much more, so we recommend catering a whole day here just so you can try your hand at everything.
Price-wise, the 981 full package costs around S$52.95 (KRW52,500) while the Race & Play package is priced from S$34.80 (KRW34,500). More details can be found here.
Don’t forget to stop by the lounge area and merch shop to pick up some memorabilia to refuel and remember the fun time spent here.
If you’re still thinking about your next travel destination, then this is your sign to book a flight to South Korea.
Do you have what it takes to become a Master racer?
